125mm autocannons in close orbit pvp

How do 125mm’s stack up against 150mm and 200mm autocannons in close range orbits (500m-2000m)? dps is slightly lower on paper (emp ammo), but does the better tracking amount to better actual dps? With an ab or pulsed mwd, the target angular velocity can be 1.0-0.5 rad/s. With a 7.5%/lvl bonus on tracking (rifter, claw, stiletto, dramiel, firetail): 125mm (0.7rad/s), 150mm (0.6rad/s) and 200mm (0.5rad/s). Without the tracking bonus (jaguar): 125mm (0.4rad/s), 150mm (0.35rad/s) and 200mm (0.3rad/s).

As an additional benefit, t2 autocannons are extremely easy to fit, i.e. a better tank+ewar.

Well, here is the Eve tracking formula. Plugging in the parameters of my usual Rifter fit with all level 5 skills and T2 autocannons with Republic Fleet EMP, I get the following results when firing on a 35m sig radius target (i.e. another Rifter):

At 1 rad/s radial velocity at a distance of 500m-2000m, 125mm autocannons offer 76% better hit chance than 150mm autocannons. This translates into 65% better applied DPS.

But at 0.5 rad/s, the 125mm’s advantage in hit chance is only 13%, which translates to only 7% better applied DPS. At even lower angular velocities, 150mm will give better DPS.

Of course, 125mm’s advantage also disappears when firing at larger targets. To give a specific example, when firing on a cruiser with 150m sig radius at 0.75 rad/s radial velocity from 1000m away, the 125mm autocannon Rifter’s DPS will be 5% worse than with 150mm.

Tracking is extremely important for DPS. The smaller guns may not do as much damage, but if the larger guns cannot track a fast ship then there will be no damage. Keep in mind that you are not going to be stationary either, if you are moving in the opposite direction the angular velocity could be even higher then you’ve mentioned. Alternatively if you can lead their orbit then you should be able to reduce the angular velocity. Technically speaking a 1400mm arty could hit a Dramiel if the pilot of the BS was able to line the ship up properly.

One thing you may may want to consider for maximising damage is the way you fly your ship. If you hit the orbit button at your optimal then the smaller guns are probably best. But if you feel confident in your manual piloting skills or you would like to improve them then the high damage guns would be best.
