Advice for getting a Freighter through several jumps

Asked by [ Moderator ]

Does anbody have any good advie on getting a freighter (e.g. an Obelisk) through several jumps as quickly and safely as possible? Advice on scouts, escorts and any other companions would be good, too.

I would like advice for exclusively high-sec journeys, mix of high- and low-sec journeys, and even how to get a freighter into null-sec.

(Assume a jump freighter and orca are not able to carry the cargo)

Run with a Rapier scout and people will struggle to catch you.

Scout the next system with the Rapier. If it looks safe jump the Obelisk in, click warp to out gate. As soon as you can, target the Obelisk with the Rapier and put 2-3 webs on it. The Obelisk will warp instantly. Warp the rapier to the out gate. Because of the slow warp speed of the Obelisk, the Rapier will likely get there before the Obelisk. Jump the Rapier in an scout the next system. Repeat until you arrive at your destination.

Make sure the Freighter pilot and Rapier pilot is in the same corp or CONCORDOKEN will ensue.

It is quite possible to use a T1 Frigate or any other ship for this as well, but the Rapier has the advantage of extended web range. It should be something reasonably small and fast though.

In high sec you should watch out for battleship gangs. A bunch of Tempests sitting on a gate should certainly set your alarm bells of.

If you want to run through low or null sec I would suggest more scouts and a dedicated webber. Run a scout through ahead of time to check the overall activity. If it looks safe, use scouts a few systems ahead and behind the Freighter, making sure to check any side systems as well if necessary.

You could also set up a heavy escort of BS and logistics or something of that nature and hope you can overpower whoever wants to gank your freighter. I would opt for the scout/web approach personally.

A rapier has web range bonuses, but a marauder has web strength bonuses. Is the marauder useful for the dedicated webber role, or is it just a “red flag to a bull” for gankers and pirates?

A marauder is too slow and cumbersome to be used in this role. Also the web strength doesn’t really matter all that much. One normal strength web will make Freighter war near instantly. Two or tree normal webs ensure an instant warp. The range is more useful because when the Freighter breaks jump cloak he can be up to 25k away from you, meaning a marauder would have to move in close, while the Rapier would not. Only the Kronos and the Paladin get the web strength bonus btw.

Guess you could run with a heavy escort as well. Edited post to reflect this.

Even a rapier is expensive for nothing. Probably worth it in low-sec/0.0 but overkill for high-sec.

'Matar: You’ve obviously never had your freighter ganked in high sec :) It does happen.

Based on these tips, I tried a 15 jump courier mission with a corp mate using a webber-fitted frigate, and the whole experience was so much better than before. I am itching to experiment with a rapier now.

If possible, you should move the freighter in times of low activity within the area -- right after downtime is pretty good for a lot of regions. Take your time, don't be afraid to safe up, log and come back when things are better.

Try a couple test jumps and adjust your default warp to distance if you find you bump on gates. A friend needed to set it to 500m to reliably avoid bumping gates.

When using webs like described above for faster warps, try to have two (or more) webbing ships if time is important. They will pick up agression and need to deaggress before jumping through the next gate. In small systems this can mean the freighter needs to sit on the gate longer then necessary.

In low/null sec having eyes everywhere is essential. Ideally you have every systems within 2 jumps scouted and the freighter executes a logoffski at the first sign of potential danger. Even better if you have ready access to a prober and logi/carrier (having witnessed the death of a freighter in low-sec that had done a logoffski with agro and then died after e-warp but before disappearing.)

Oh, did I imply something with my insistence that the cargo could only fit in a freighter? ;) I’m sure I don’t know what you guys are on about!!

Train Train Train. you want warp drive operation to 5 so you warp as soon as possible, you want Evasive manouvering to 5 so you turn quicker, you want advanced spaceship command as high as you can bear to train it, because that also will help agility. If you only have one web, don't web til your warp bar is half way full, then you will usually insta warp, if you have more webs, straight away is good. Make insta warp points off any station you need to go in and out of. When you come out of a station, you are traveling fast, and before it will let you warp, your freighter will slow, stop, then turn. that's why it takes so long. With an instawarp point, preferably off grid in a straight line from the undock, you will, well...umm instawarp lol. Make sure not to put the undock at any logical distance tho, something someone else might also go for. Also, if you are making multiple trips into a station, make multiple instawarp points, and use different ones each time. Paranoia is the lifeblood of a capsuleer

One thing to remember : You can/should use alternative routes even they are longer. Direct routes are most dangerous since they are regularly scouted/camped. Also do use highsec. This does not ive you great speed to comply your joyrney but safety is sometimes more important. Predictable behaviour is sometimes your worst enemy. Seen somany times a freighter heading to some known "pipe" only to find waiting gank in other end (sometimes 10 jumps ahead).
