Allocating free Skillpoints: Which skills make a good choice?

Asked by [ Editor ] , Edited by Melissa Blick [ Editor ]

Now that learning skills are going away, many of us will have up to 5mil SP to allocate. Ideally, these should be allocated to those skills what players are rarely remapped for, but could still be useful. This automatically rules out all int+mem, per+wil skills. What are those skills which are often trained even with low SP/hr?

So far I have Drone Interfacing V, Sentry Drones V, possibly some Trade skills (Margin Trading IV, Marketing etc).

Edit1: Acceleration Control V. Like always having a Zor's Hyperlink for free.
Edit2: Made community wiki.
Edit3: Just realised this is probably the last chance to make a quick special-purpose alt if you have free slots. Remap to mem+int. Train all tier 1 learning skills to 5. Then train Eidetic Memory as far as possible. You should have around 1.5mil SP to redistribute in 2 weeks. In theory, this could even be combined with a Cerebral Accelerator (400 mil)
Edit4: Changed title to reflect allocation free skillpoints in general, rather than a specific incident where we received free SP.

anyone who's getting points back, and doesn't have them already, should train leadership 5 and the 4 base boosting skills (armored warfare, information warfare, skirmish warfare, and siege warfare) to at least 4 if not 5. leadership to 5 is 256,000 SP, the other 4 are 512,000 each for level 5. so a total of 2,304,000...and you can always be the go to man for being the squad commander. and the average pilot will never have to really look at leadership again.

so many pilots overlook leadership skills, particularly since its charisma based, and they are so nice to have in the long run.

That’s what I plan to do.

If you’re only going to train the base boosting skills to 4, then I’d seriosuly consider training the Armour one to 5 and getting a mate you fly with regularly to train the Shield one to 5. Personally I have all of them at 5 :–)

Leadership V is required for fighters. Necessary if you want to fly carriers at any point, even if you don’t need to be squad leader/booster.

other benefits of leadership 5: access to 10 of 10 plexes

Also, as Trebor says in the Dev blog comment thread:

If your current attribute specifications allow you to train some learning skills at a high rate of SP per hour, you can do some arbitrage over the next few weeks -- train those skills, bank the SP, then use them to train skills where your SP rate is slow (like charisma-based skills).

Also, having a bank account of unused skillpoint will be handy for T3 pilots who are in the habit of getting popped -- they can use them to retrain the skill they lost instantly.

Ugh, the default quote background makes my eyes bleed…

Saw the same idea on some other forums earlier. Train Clarity V (per+wil) or Logic V(int+mem) depending on your current remap. Then you can redistribute those SP to those odd skills after Dec 14.

I am spending a million of my alt's learning sp on Anchoring 1-5 and Starbase Defense Management 1-4 for POS gunnery. Skills I always knew I would need but never wanted to slog through training and with a low sp/hr too.

SDM has, in my opinion, the least logical prerequisites out of all of Eve's skills. I get that it would have been difficult to make it more logical without numerous prereqs for different weapon systems but Anchoring 5?

i support POS gunner skills! one vote!

anchoring 5 is 768,000 SP and starbase defense management to 4 is another 317,000 ish. so about 1,085,000. i say this is a very good use of the points!

Useful indeed! In fact, I have a dedicated SDM 3 alt. Need to finish SDM 4 (2.5 days) before the 100% training bonus goes away.

Don’t forget that any skill you start training before you reach 1.6m sp trains at double speed all the way through…not just until you hit 1.6m sp so I’d stick something as long as possible in before they take the double speed away.

Did not know this! I thought the skill had to be under 1.6mil SP to qualify for the bonus. At least evemon thinks so in all training plans for alts I’ve made. Should investigate this.

I’ve never started a char since this came in so can’t confirm 100% but I’ve heard it from more than one place.

Noone have yet mentioned PI skills which are charisma based too.

2 of the 5 are charisma based primary. those are nice choices too if you are industrial-ish

You need only those 2 if you are planning to concentrate on refining only, without any extracting.

Basically, your best choice is somewhere within Drones, Industry, Leadership groups or maybe Tech2 Spaceship Command skills(WIl+PER) skills. Exact layout depends on you and what are you going to do. I doubt that there will be two players which will put their SPs in the very same skills, but the general guideline look like it.

Well, I'll be finishing off Wing Command 5, if required. The remainder will probably go on Astrometrics 5 (so I can use a Black Ops properly) and possibly Carrier 5.

I may consider Minnie Cruiser 5 and Med projectiles 5 as a priority though.

im thinking gal carrier to 5 myself. fighters 4, capital ships 4 and then a few odds and ends to eat up the 5,376,000SP

I have my attributes mapped for training Per/Wil skills and will be for some time so Char/Int/Mem skills make the most sense. I'll probably put half my learning SP into Thermodynamics 5 which I'd never bother to wait for otherwise (but will be handy as I burn out stuff a lot) and the rest into leadership 5/warfare link 4 for command ships to save time later.

Personally I would throw it into level 5 on important skills you use with high training times. Carrier 5, Battleship 5, logistics 5, things like that. Needs to be relevant to what you are up to of course.

Evasive Manuvering to V Warp Drive to V Navagation to V Jumpdrive to V Caldari BS to V

After training apropreate sub skills to IV

most of my Leaderships Skills are already V and the few that are not are at IV

The correct answer is whatever you want that you're not mapped to train quickly at the moment:)

Also what Melissa said, particularly if you have a rank three learning skill that you can train more quickly that what you're presently training, switch it and get more sp back than you would have gained otherwise.

I have 3 Main Toons...

Learning / What i'm getting! (comment)

  • 4.1m sp / Recon 5, HAC 5, HIC 5, rest twords CS 5
    • It's friken awesome to run 4 races cruiser 5 on one toon.
    • Already have Logi 5. So this finishes all cruiser T2 L5 4 me!
  • 3.5m sp / Large Lasers 5, Am BS 5
    • If going dread, go Rev, why deal with all that ammo?
    • HEHE oh and already having BO4 and Maraud 4 is pretty fun too i guess.
  • 2.5m sp / Logistics 5 / Triage 1-4
    • What good is Gal Carrier 5, Fighter 5, Bomber 5 without triage?

What about the ALTS? They all have 1m each if not more!?!

  • Cyno 1 / frig 5, Covops
  • Cyno 2 / frig 5, Covops
  • Cyno 3 / Indy 5, towards transport
  • Trader / Jump Clone Skill 5
  • Researcher / Industrial Ship 5, towards freighter

Boo Yow. I figured it all out, for all the toons in 30 minutes.
