Ammo and missile "base shield/armor damage"

Every damage dealing item seems to have two sets of stats, one "damage types" set and one "base damage" set. How do those interact? How do you work out actual damage dealt (even if only ideal case) from those two infos ?

Examples :

Exterminator FOF light I :

  • explo 56 hp
  • base shield 22.4 hp
  • base armor 50.4 hp

EMP S :

  • EM 9 hp
  • explo 2 hp
  • kin 1 hp
  • base shield 10.4
  • base armor 6.15

Smartbombs don't have the second set of stats. Drones don't have it either.

Next thing: how is all of this affected by damage multipliers? (if that question makes any sense beyond the obvious ;-)

As far as I know the base damage attributes are from a time long ago when the damage types we used today (EM, Kin, Therm, Exp) didn't exist and ships didn't have resistances against this. Ammo just made different damage against shield or armor and there where skills to improve this.

Today this Attributes don't have any meaning any more and are just historical values in the database, ... no clue why CCP doesn't remove them.

EDIT:

Also have a look at this Question -> http://skilltrainingcomplete.com/questions/5049/new-skills

The values for "Base Shield Damage" and "Base Armor Damage" indicated in the ammo attributes are not taken into account when calculating damage. Only the values listed under "EM Damage", "Thermal Damage", "Kinetic Damage" and "Explosive Damage" are taken into account.

I believe the base damage numbers are simply there to indicate how much damage you would do against a standard T1 resisted tank (0% EM, 20% TH, 40% KI, 60% EX on shields I believe). I would just ignore the number completely. They are of no real use.

I don't have a source for this I'm afraid (remember reading it but can't find a link), but I've done a fair bit of testing (especially on bomb damage) with my corp mates and this seems to be accurate.
