Are Marauders worth it?

Asked by [ Editor ]

Are Marauders worth it for running high-sec level 4 missions? Right now, my missioning character flies a fairly standard PvE Maelstrom, I'm thinking of training him for a Vargur to increase my profits. But Vargurs are pretty expensive, so I'm wondering how much more effective a Marauder really is at level 4's. Would it be a worthwhile investment of my ISK and training time?

I had a Marauder for mission running. It was easier to run them 'cause, as told before, you can shoot and loot at the same time. 40km tractor beam range is very helpful and when you consider, that you have that limited radius, then the advantage of a cruise golem vs. a AC vargur turns to zero, imho. Further you got that big cargo that is helpful if you loot everything and with the vargur you might go for looting everything cause you got the space (ok, looting 800 cap booster are still a pain in the ass if there are too many).

I sold my vargur cause it was dead money for me. I'm more a deadspace-complex-isk-maker and for that a marauder ist too expensive to loose, imho.

Judging by your description, a Marauder does make sense for me. Thanks.

If all you intend to do with that character is mission running, then yes, train for Marauders (including up to level 5). They are definitely the King of PVE. Plus, you can salvage and loot and the same time. In the end, the investment will be worth it, and the ship should pay for itself.

Marauders are worth it. But they are also a yummy target everyone wants to catch and kill. So it is not worth it to do lowsec in a marauder I'd say. Unless you own that lowsec and neuts are rare.

Hisec lvl4 are just nice. But watch out for can flippers. Never ever shoot at anyone. They want your marauder, not your crappy wrecks.

The other side of the debate is the fact that marauders have weak sensor strength. I was on Vent when a corp mate had his Golem scrammed and damped... he couldn't run, he couldn't target and in the end, he lost his ship.

Couldnt you fit sensor booster on it and script it to extra targeting range?

Looking up the missions prior to running them would help as well (so you know when to use the mission).

I guess he did something wrong. Serpentis with their dampeners tend to be close to you so you could kill them, and Guristas with ECM… They are just meh. One day i’ve got almost fully jammed by jam frigs in last pocket of guristas extra, I unleashed drones on them, and they killed all trigger frigs. I’ve got almost every ship possible to spawn knocking my shield(except for some starting BS), and I tanked em all in my fully t2 fitted Golem and killed them, right through insane jamming. Burned something like 20 cap booster 800s.

You might also want to consider the Nightmare or Macheriel (pirate faction BS) if you're planning on dishing out that amount of isk. I believe the Mach is together with the Golem considered the best all around mission runner ship, Nightmare is better than both against Sansha's I believe it was.

A fellow corp mate has a Golem, and he dual boxes it with a Tengu, I feel quite perfetic in my hurricane running around salvaging his wrecks, the two of us can run lvl 5's in about an hour like this, and I'm bringing no DPS (except a couple of warrior drones) and very little tank.

The Golem litteraly melts anything bigger then cruiser in seconds, and I have seen a Battleship go down in a 3 volley before (he does have insane skills though some 6+ year character here)

It's tank is very respectable also, although generally we let the tengu tank, the golem tractors all the wrecks and the hurricane puts it's 8 salvagers on behind it.

He could easily breaze lvl 4's solo in it, I can't think of anything better really, although if you are salvaging too the problem becomes multi tasking :)

Only thing I saw the Golem struggling to kill was scraming frigs, (the warriors dealt with them quickly though) it can kill them, but it takes a lot longer/wastes ammo to get hits with big guns/launchers.

I decided to use the Paladin. I skilled capacitor skills on 5, and all remaining on the 4. In h-slots I put four beamy's, tracktor, salvager and DB smartboomb(for scrammbling/webing frigates and some drones)thanks to that I destroy everything within a radius of 7.5 km. Small targets beyond the reach of damage I destroyd using drones. On m-slot I put 2x capacitor recharger and 2x tracking computer. The rest of fit is 2xCCC, LAR, 2xhardeners, 2xHS and tracking enhancer(all t2 except rigs). That fit works perfect for Royal Khanid missions, which are usually against the DB and Sansha. Sometimes I use AB and DBweb(but TC in med slot is much better chose). Additionally, you can increase your dps with chip to turrets damage(+5% I do not remember the name now).

In response to the person who posted about the Paladin. I couldn't imagine undocking it without two stasis webs on it. I use mega pulse lasers, MWD, tracking computer 2, 2 x stasis webs. You get such a huge bonus to stasis webs in that thing any ships imaginary npc pilots face will slam their pod visor when you turn them on. While running class 3/4 wormhole sites in mine I go for the largest targets first and let the frigs swarm around me, then at the end i use the stasis web setup to insta pop each one. Level 4 missions are for new characters in my opinion. I make 750m isk a night scanning down sleeper sites based out of a class 3 wormhole (the other wormholes around you are the key). This allows me to pvp in my absolution without worrying about losing ships.

I grabbed a Marauder (Kronos) pretty much when they first came out and never looked back. It's got a great PVE tank, and can fit the extra damage mods without sacrificing tank to give it some damn good dps.

Plus the ability to loot and salvage as you go is a massive plus.

Is it worth it? Well it depends how much missioning you do and your PVE experience. I wouldn't fly one if I was new to EVE as they an expensive loss.

It is difficult to be new to EVE and fly marauder, considering its impressive skill requirements, both required for ship and needed to fly it effectively.

…and that is exactly my point. A lot of people jump into a ship as soon they can rather than training up the support skills etc.
