Are missiles useful in PvP combat?

Asked by

I know they're fantastic in PvE, but it seems to me like the slow rate of fire and travel time would make missiles a not very good choice against players.

Missile sniping is just completely horrible, yes. But lots of PvP goes on the pattern "tackler got him->gang warped on top of him->he is a wreck", so shooting is at point blank range, and missile speed doesn't matter. Missiles don't have tracking issues, so you will be able to put stable damage on lesser-sized vessels. And final damage is the same, and choice between missiles and turrets is, after all, a choice between missile ships and turret ships.

Being that the Drake is among the most widely used PvP ships in EVE, missiles are very useful.

though this is partly because of its very nice tanking abilities.

Indeed it does.

just cause so many people think the Drake is sent from god… doesn’t mean that missiles are better then turrets >_<

The primary reason for drakes becoming so popular in PVP was a combination of their tank, low SP requirements, cheapness, the fact that many could PVP and PVE in the same boat and the fact that missiles generated an insane server load. This server load would mean that, amongst other things, capacitor didn’t discharge – allowing permanent MWD and shield transfer and making capacitor warfare impossible. Even when CCP began to improve on this, the huge lag caused by missiles ground the pace of PVP way down, making it much simpler and rendering player skill much less relevant.

It's much easier to pick a damage type with missiles so if you know what kind of ships you'll be fighting you can pick damage to take advantage of a resist hole, and an aml caracal is a great frig killer

Hey there,, I live in geminate now for a long time and when we say missiles are widely used in pvp. That can be true (for empire) Ive seen my share of gate camps, fleet battles, roams, cloaky suckers.

And to be honest,.,. No drakes

When we have a cta, indeed sometimes we choose the drake, with a special fit.

But just for pvp.. Most i see are amarr and minmatar ships.

BFF.
