Can we back up People & Places settings to keep bookmark folders from disappearing?

Asked by [ Editor ]

Even more annoying than the Overview losing its settings is the People & Places window losing it. My main has close to a thousand bookmarks that are (nominally) contained in various folders. Too often, the settings revert back to defaults and all the folders are gone. This leaves all the bookmarks for a system lumped together in one place, making it impossible to see them all when trying to find the right one on the in-space right-click menu. You're forced to recreate your folders and slowly put them all back where they belong.

Since the folders are client-side, there must be a file somewhere in the EVE directory that contains them. Anybody know where that is?

I suggest looking in: C:\Users\\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings. Eve puts local setting here. Note this is for a Vista installation. Also note that c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility represents where Eve client is installed (eg C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE in my case), so this may be different if you installed in a different location.

In C:\Users\bradford\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings you will find a number of .dat files (you may need to turn on the setting to see file extensions to see the .dat extension). I have files like: core_char_nnnnnnn.dat char_nnnnnnn.dat user_nnnnnnn.dat core_user_nnnnnnn.dat

and some others. Note nnnnnn is a number representing your account or character number. I guess one of these files might hold your folder info, but I don't know for sure. This is what I back up to save my Eve settings for my accounts and characters. I use EveHQ, which has a backup tool to backup Eve settings, and it grabs all of these files. You have to do a restore manually, but it will do the backup for you. I've had to do a restore once from the backup (moving to a new machine) and restoring the files EveHQ backed up did the trick for me, including the bookmarks folders as I recall.
