Corp Hangar/Ship Maint array of an Abandoned POS- Best way to loot?

I've heard that if you find an abandoned POS with a corp hangar array or ship maintenance array, you can 'take ownership' of them by killing the tower and setting up your own at the same spot (assuming one has enough time to kill it/anchor a new one etc. without being interrupted). Does anyone know what happens to the items inside the structures if you do this? Am i better off just killing the hangar/maintenance array and hoping that all the good items will drop? Do the items disappear if you kill the POS, and unanchor the module?

You can't anchor a new tower when old POS modules are around, so you can't "overtake" the modules.

As far as I know you have only two options, when it comes to other peoples modules, either get the module or get the content. In Both cases you have to destroy the old tower first. In order to get the Module you just unanchor it (needs to have full struct and armor) and haul it away, all content will be destroyed. To get the content you blow the module up and loot what drops (50% survival chance like on destroyed ships).

Does anyone know if you can use a cargo scanner on the module to determine the content before blowing it up?

It is different when you unanchor a module at your own tower. The Tower has to be online and the module has to be empty.

EDIT:

It seems if you unanchor a lab or production module that has active jobs that are not started remotely the jobs BPO will drop.

I've heard of cases when people managed to take over someones laboratory, unanchor it, then repackage at a station and get all the blueprints inside. This should be the same for hangars and ship maintenance arrays.

I’ve heard this about labs too but I don’t think that would work for maintenance arrays, etc or that would be a great way to ‘compress’ cargo for hauling. These arrays are a few thousand m3 when scooped but can hold a millions of m3 of stuff!
