Self destruct leaves a salvageable wreck behind but drops no loot.
You do receive an insurance payout. If you can manage to build or buy a ship for less than 70% of the platinum payout level you will actually profit from self destructing the insured ship.

If you plan on doing insurance fraud, a good idea is to fit a civilian gun or something similar and shooting the station, you will then pick up a global criminal flag and the station guns (all 4) will shoot you. This is much faster then waiting 2 minutes. The agro from the station guns lasts 15 minutes from the last shot so you only need to do this once and then undock the 40 battleships one by one.
