Dominix - Shield or Armour Tank

I have been playing around with EFT in regards to Dominix and how best to set it up - it will be for running level 4 missions with the support or supporting another BS. As it stands with my skills (above average for shield and armour tanking) it appears the best option for me would be to have a passive shield fit to warp in 1st get aggro drop drones with the 2nd BS coming in behind with minimal tank to apply all the DPS. Conversely, when I look at doing an active armour tank it would appear I can get more out of my drones but at a drastically reduced tank - albeit with a much greater buffer so it would be prudent for the domi to arrive second on the scene. Context the other BS would in the main be Amarr.

So background out of the way is it really as the figures say:

Is a passive shield tanked Domi that much tougher than an armour tanked one or are first appearances deceptive? Does the ability to use the mids in the armour tanked one really overcome this? Which one is really the best for level 4s.

Out of further interest would the navy dom then make you give a different answer?

Also what kind of NPCs will you be fighting… this will greatly affect the outcome.

I’ve heard of passive shield Myrmidons, but never Domis… I think you might have to reveal more details around your potential fits.

Generally a shield tanked Dominix would be active-tanked with damage modules in the lows (the 'shield gank' doctrine).

Pottsey created the first passive shield tanked Dominix many years ago, but these days, it's usually Drakes that end up being passive tanked.

A sample passive tanked Dominix should tank > 600DPS, e.g:

Note that the Navy Issue Dominix has much worse shield recharge rate, so you won't get any better tank from it even with the extra slots.

Also note that shield tanked ships generally do pretty ordinary damage compared to other fits - you end up using mid slots that could have been omnidirectional tracking links, low slots that could have been damage modules, and rig slots that could have been sentry damage augmenters. If you're ok with that, though, a passive fit for a Dominix or Myrmidon is perfectly viable.

An excellent point on the Navy Dom btw + 1 just for that easily overlooked nugget.

Also worth noting is changing those purgers to tier 2 will add a good whack onto the recharge rate. But a great answer and thank you – for the record I have now made both up and the passive shield method does tank about 10% more but you lose about a fair bit of controllable DPS for that – my recommendation was if you were to dual box then fit passive shield as a jump in take agro ship if you wanted to actively control the domi then go armour fit – I will vary it depending whether I am aiding myself of a friend.

You might want to replace one or two LSE’s with Omni Tracking Links if using sentries. Or even replace a purger rig with a sentry damage rig. This will ding your tank somewhat but you can recover by using rat-specific hardeners. Should still leave enough tank for serp/guristas/angels.

A shield domi is workable and I have done it, but it's a tad underwhelming to my mind.

It's not actually a better tank than an armour domi. The only big upside I could see is in terms of EHP.

If you're worried about not having to manage the "tank" client, it's p easy to set-up a domi to permarun an activetank. The mid slot thing is probably a factor with drones too because there's useful stuff to spend a mid on.

It's also horrible for cap so unless you're fitting it with projectiles you're not gaining much by saving grid for guns. If you go all SPRs you may even have issues running your hardeners and warping around.

If you really want to do this, I'd go for a rattlesnake or gila and tank that way. A passive gila is a pretty good tank.

If you warna use a domi with drones and warna be passiv regen i would recomend getting a rattlesnake.

they are quite cheap and tankes better and deal more damage than the dominix

they are allso close to solo tank lvl 5's if fitted properly.

edit:

with going full passiv it can tank following:

  • 2476 dps against guristas
  • 1595 dps angel cartel
  • 1422 dps blood raiders
  • 1512 dps sansha's nation
  • 2034 dps serpentis
  • 1270 dps omni

with this fit

this ship should do 500 dps with it t2 heavy drones at all skills lvl 5

The rattlesnake is looking more and more like a long term goal although looking at the requirements it’s not that much more although I do think it would be more a high profile target.

EDIT: I was wrong (messed up in EFT somehow); please ignore this post.

A bog-standard T2-fit PVE Dominix (2xLAR, DCII, 3 energized plates, ANP, plus enough CCCs and cap rechargers to keep it nearly cap stable with the guns off) will tank over 500 DPS with all level 5 skills. It will tank over 450 DPS with my skills, and I don't even fly Gallente.

I have no idea how you managed to get anything resembling a decent passive shield tank on a Dominix. The best T2 passive shield tank that I could come up with tanked around 250 DPS - and it had no slots left for damage or propulsion mods.

I would strongly recommend an armor tank for your Domi, unless the NPCs you are fighting do a lot of NOSing (and if that is the case, you probably ought to get a Drake or a Rattlesnake).
