Drone bandwidth?

I was wondering if anyone could explain what exactly does this do for a ship. I know there is usually a higher bandwidth associated to ships that have larger drone bays and obviously, the higher the better, but is it basically a useless stat? or is there something more there to pay attention to?

Hi, the Drone Bandwith is a relatively recent introduciton, and a massive nerf to things like the Mrym, Eos or Ishkur!

It basically works as a throttle on the number or type of drones you can launch irrespective of your drone bay. You could the largest possibly drone bay going, however if you only have 5mbit bandwith, you can only use one light drone.

  • Light drones = 5mbit each & 5m3 volume
  • Medium drones = 10mbit each & 10m3 volume
  • Heavy drones = 25mbit each & 25m3 volume
  • Sentry drones = 25mbit each & 25m3 volume
  • Fighters = 25mbit each and 5000m3 volume
  • Fighter Bombers = 500mbit each & 5000m3 volume

...each ship has a Drone Bandwith. So for example a Megathron has a Drone Bay size of 125m3 and a Drone Bandwith of 125mbit. This means you at most have 5 Heavy or Sentry Drones (5*25mbit bandwith = 125mbit and 5*25m3 volume = 125m3!) or a combination of Light, Medium and less than 5 Sentry/Heavy drones.

The Zealot has 0mbit Drone Bandwith and a 0m3 Drone Bay, therefore it canont use any drones!

The Incursus has 5mbit Drone Bandwoth and a 5m3 Drone Bay. So it can carry one light drone and control one light drone.

The maulus has 10mbit Drone Bandwoth and a 10m3 Drone Bay. So it can carry two light drones and control two light drones OR cary one medium drone and control one medium drone.

The Dronebandwidth describes how many / big drones you can launch. The volume of a drone is the same as the used Bandwidth, but both are separate attributes.

Example:

  • An Ogre Heavy Drone for has a volume of 25 m³ and uses a bandwith of 25 Mbit/sec.
  • A Vexor has a Dronebay of 100 m³ and a Drone Bandwith of 75 Mbit/sec.

So you can store 4 Ogres in your Dronebay (100 m³ / 25 m³ = 4) but can only launch 3 (75 Mbit/sec / 25 Mbit/sec = 3) assuming you have the skill Drones at least at 3.

Bandwidth is the fitting ressource limitator so that you cannot use "too much" of a given ressource.

Just like CPU and powergrid, as well as turret hardpoints will make sure you can put something too powerfull on your ship.

Just like calibration will make sure you cannot put too much "rig wise".

And so on.

It's a basic ressource that will force you into making choises when it comes to fitting ;) Otherwise you might as well fit doomsday weapons on your gallente shuttle and your done :D

Nice answer! Short, precise and gives overview of all fitting limitations :)

The bandwidth was basicly the drone nerf. A long time ago you were able to field 5 heavy drones in a myrmidon and eos but adding bandwidth changed that.

Its not very apparent in most vessels as they only have the drone bay for 1 flight of drones but in ships that use drones as dps like the or myrmidon or eos its a major hindrance.

But to awnser your question bandwidth is basicly the maximum amount and size of drones you can field.

You could also squeeze out Hammerheads from an Ishkur… damn you CCP, damn you!

As above for how it works.

The design idea was basically they wanted to encourage multiple waves rather than heavies on the Myrm or Mediums on the Ishkur.

As much as I know higher bandwidth allows you to control larger drones. More bandwidth = more larger drones you can control (up to maximum 5). For example, Dominix has 125 mb/s drone bandwidth which allows control of 5 heavy/sentry drones (or light/medium).

I don't know about carriers and supper carriers but I guess they have even more bandwidth for controlling fighter and bomber drones. These capital ship also receive bonus on number of drones they can launch (one per level of ship skill) and can fit drone control units (+1 drone).

Edit: Super carriers (like Nyx) can launch additional 3 drones per level of ship skill.

Sounds logical. I didn’t even think that it might be related to the size of the drone being controlled.

I think it’s somewhat proportional to ship role – drone boat: large drone bay, large bandwidth.

Not necessarily. Amarr boats tend to have large drone bays but limiting bandwith whereas Gallente have large bandwith but limiting drone bays.
