Everyone says I should have a trade alt in e.g. Jita. Why should I?

Why should I have a trade alt in e.g. Jita when I still have to haul all my stuff I want to sell there anyway and could just as well sell it with the hauling alt?

Is it just to check prices for buying stuff? But can't I do that at e.g. Eve-Central? Or is Eve-Central full of false info or old info? But a major trade hub such as Jita is surely kept updated very well by a lot of people regularly?

Please explain the benefits.

If you are in the Forge and have the right trading skills you don't need a trade alt in jita.

The only reasons I know why you should have a trade alt in jita:

  1. If you make sell orders of your items and nobody has bought your stuff you don't need to fly to jita and/or The forge to renew sell order.

  2. If you did make sell orders and the prices changed, you can easily adapt your prices.

There are plenty of other trade hubs than Jita. Most people simply pick Jita because it's the biggest trade hub, and that brings in a lot of customers. It also makes it a bad market because there's too much competition if you're a trader looking to profit over everyone else by playing the buy-low-sell-high game. It's a good market, though, if you just want to liquidize assets, as the ask prices tend to be a bit higher than other regions.

In many cases you don't even need a trade hub at all - any station will do as long as there's a buyer willing to fly there and pick up the merchandise. It's all a matter of being able to sell your stuff at a fair price. You've got the right idea by using eve-central.

Refer to a question like this one for a list of many other large markets to exploit. Some of the lesser-well-known areas in that list would fare better for an alt that's specialized in trade for buy-low-sell-high speculation.

I don't know about Jita exactly, but it is certainly a good idea to have a trader alt...

Reasons for this are you can set the character up with High Charisma and willpower which most trade skills need, you lower the taxes you pay, increase the number of sell/buy orders and extend the range of your buying powers by having these skills so it's well worth doing.

I would put this trader into a market region (as stated by Thikron) Then you know your getting the best prices for your goods.

It doesn't have to be the Forge, if you wish to be different go to Amarr or Rens those regions have big trade hubs as well.

In all honesty if you have an alt hauler, once he can use an ity V (assuming you've picked Gallente) then do a remap and learn the trade skills on the same account then you don't have to pedal two characters.

EDIT: I see knee has beaten me too some of this info also :)

You can train those trade skills on your main char as well. All you need is neural remap.

you can do this, however a lot of people have a concise idea what they want to do with their main, and would rather be training PVP skills then Trade ones. If you are doing it on one account then it won’t make much difference, however if you are starting a new account your main can continue training. lastly, if you would be using a precious neural remap on charisma.
