Exploration Agent - Cosmic Signatures

When I send out probes to find the Cosmic Sig Training Station, I get a 99.99% strength reading (meaning I can't warp to it). How do I get 100% reading? I'm using 4 probes and have pinpointed the location to within .25 AU using the probes' range. Thanks!

You should probably add additional details to your question. What ship are you flying, how are your skill levels etc.

CCP is using the correct math for finding a spot in 3 dimensions.

Each probe can find the distance to a target. With one probe, that gives you a sphere of all of the spots that are that distance from it - the target lies somewhere on that sphere. With two probes, it is the intersection of two spheres which is a circle. Three probes will give you the intersection of two circles - two points. Four probes will give you one point.

You do not need more than four probes. If you use more than four probes, the code will pick the best four of the probes.

The best arrangement for the probes is where the probes are furthest apart from each other. This lets you get the strongest signal and lock. If all the probes are on the same plane it is difficult to determine if the unknown is above or below the plane - they give similar answer.

So, the best arrangement for the probes is in a tetrahedron (four sided D&D dice) with the unknown near the center. The easiest way to visualize this is three probes in a triangle below the unknown and one above in the center. Another way to think of a tetrahedron is as a wedge with two above in a line and two below in a line rotated 90 degrees.

This will give a better signal and faster time to finding the signature rather than moving the probes around randomly.

I suspect that probes interfere with each other so in order to get high signal strength you want both to have probes close to the site and as far away from each other as possible. In this case tetrahedron is the best. On the other hand 4 probes in one plane is easier to handle and usually results in getting results quicker.

I agree that the way you layout your probes is important. When something like that happens to me, I add another probe to consolidate the signal strength. It always worked up to now. Of course you need the skill (Astrometrics) to max the number of probes you can control.

For your specific problem you need signal strength, so,

Skill you have to train: Astrometric Acquisition +5%/level signal strength

An implant that could help you: Hardwiring - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' PPG-X (1%/3%/5% signal strength)

There's also a Rig you can fit your ship: Gravity Capacitor Upgrade (signal strength +10%)

Are you flying a ship that has probe bonuses (CovOps)? The bonuses provided by this ship mean a lot on targets that are hard to scan down. You can also add rigs to the ship to increase the scan strength even further.

How did you arrange your probes? Are they all in the same spot? If this is the case try moving them so they surround the scan result and the scan areas overlap nicely.

If that does not do it, I suspect you may need to train your skills further so you can deploy a full set of five probes.

Ok, I figured it out. I couldn't get all 4 probes to find the Cosmic Sig, so I moved them around like crazy until they finally got it. Man that was frustrating. Thanks for the advice though!

This should probably have been a comment, instead of an answer…
