FC'ing from a covops. Why is it frowned upon?

I've been in a few large gang fights where the FC got primaried right away, and had to warp out (once in a pod). The whole gang fell in disarray without leadership and we lost the fight.

Other than the fact that the FC looks much tougher in a good gank-fit ship, is there a good reason he shouldn't be in a covert ops directing the troops rather than adding his own dps tp the battle? For a small gang, his ship might matter, but adding one more ship to a 100+ fleet is far less useful than having the FC stay on grid for the entire fight. But so far all large fleets I've been in had scouts in covops, and FC's who often top the killboards. What gives?

Sounds to me like one of three things is happening if the FC is being primed right away,

  1. either you have a spy in fleet / on coms

  2. your FC's are too well known to whomever your fighting

  3. your FC is standing out or in a high priority ship (eg Hac in T1 cruiser gang or is flying dictor/recon)

1 and 2 are quite possibly related, even more so if you are going up against the same groups day in day out. There isn't much of a counter as from experience I can tell you a good spy is the last person you thought it was. You best bet here is for you FC to either be always locked by logistics and on everyones watchlist or to have an alt in fleet as standby.

Of course the best solution is to make sure you have a backup FC.

There are two reasons why FCing from a covops in general doesn't work.

Firstly as FC you need to be able to lock your targets in order to know when to keep applying dps and when to switch targets.

Secondly regardless of how tight knit a corp / alliance is... people will start to question orders given from someone who for whatever reason is not putting their isk on the line.

Remember, stay vigilant (someone on coms but not in fleet? someone in fleet but not accounted for? KICK THEM)

Blend in (Similar ship to the rest of the fleet)

Have a backup, either another character you can switch to or another FC in fleet.

Also, everything in EVE is situational. FCing is also frowned on from Logi, but I’ve done that before to great success. IT is possible to FC well from a cloaky but for the reasons given, it is more difficult and requires special planning and an understanding in the whole fleet of what’s going on. FCing under those conditions should be reserved for special occasions only.
