Honing Your Hauling: What indy do you use for the different types of hauling you do as a trader?

Asked by [ Editor ]

We all know the fairly obvious situations. If you have a huge load to carry across high-sec then you would use a freighter such as a Fenrir. If you needed to retrieve goods from a station in low or null sec you would jump into a cloaky hauler such as a Prowler.

But what about all those other situations? More specifically what indy do you use when you're: - picking up goods purchased via region-wide buy orders that are scattered across an entire system or region - you're about to embark on the yellow-brick road to Jita but you had a bad week only have 10 000m3 in goods to haul - you need to get 30 full implant sets across high-sec to Jita, Rens, Dodixie, etc.

Do you change your hauling strategy based on value of goods or volume of goods?

The reason I ask is that I currently use my Fenrir for any haul I make to trade hubs (I can just AFK and read a book/ watch TV). I use my 27 000m3 Mammoth for picking up various items scattered across a region and a cloaky for those pesky low sec runs. As you can imagine these runs can take a ton of time so I would like to optimize my hauling by using a range of ships that match the load volume and value.

Can anyone share as to what ships they used in these different situations in order to increase efficiency through lowering the amount time spent in transit?

Let me qualify this as simple as possible.

In general terms for efficiency use the smallest ship possible for the job. Smallest ships align quicker, move quicker and often warp quicker.

Obvious exclusions such as going into low sec, emphasis needs to go on survival rather than efficiency and better to take 2 or 3 runs in a cloaky hauler than risk getting it popped in a itty 5. Still for skill books or BPO's I use a fast frigate even in low sec due to the align speed.

More specific, here is a list of my ship inventory and what I use them for.

less than 100m3 (Stilletto)

greater than 100m3 but less than 8,000m3 (Cloaky Crane)

between 8,000 and 10,000m3 (Viator)

Greater than 10,000m3 less than 40,000m3 (hi-sec) (Itteron V)

Greater than 10,000m3 less than 40,000m3 (low-sec, plus alt scout) (Bustard)

Greater than 10,000m3 less than 40,000m3 (low-sec, extended duration or Null Sec) (Viator multiple trips)

bigger than 100m3 up to 40,000m3 High Value cargo (hi-Sec) Orca.

More than 40,000m3 (hi-sec) Charon

More than 40,000m3 (low-sec or null sec) Rhea.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: For vessels that have a range of hauling volume, ie the itty's and the advanced industrial ships. I carry in my cargo hold sufficient Internal Nano structure modules and expanded cargo hold modules to fill the low slots of the ship with either.

On a Viator yes that is 15m3 of space that you can't use, but to save time there is no point in having lots of outstanding cargo space, so I have all my expanders in and fill up then remove as many as possible while keeping sufficient space in hold, I then stick in the nano's to improve align speed and agility in the empty slots.

+1: Brilliant answer as usual Matty :) Exactly what I was looking for

No Probs, dependant on what sort of trips you use will determine your most used craft. Will add an edit actually as something occured to me.

Regarding the EDIT: So essentially you’re saying that you keep a range of fittings for flexibility so you can match your load to your cargohold and use the remaining slots for agility… makes perfect sense.

Basically yes, if your viator has 3 lows I keep 3 nano’s in the lows for traveling empty and then add in expanded’s one by one until I have just enough cargo hold for the carry level. That way I keep maximum agility and therefore align time possible. Won’t make a vast amount of difference for a 5 jump haul, but if you are say going between rens and jita it makes quite a difference.

One of the critical numbers for hauling in non-highsec is 10k m3 of space – the amount of space a packaged cruiser takes.

I love my blockade runner (Prorater) and I have two, one set up for agility with about 3,000 m^3 cargo and one for max cargo with a little over 10,000 m^3. The agility one for venturing into dangerous systems and the cargo one for the rest of the time. The reason I am so keen on them is they align and warp so much faster than any other hauler and so are a lot quicker and so less boring.

I find 10,000 m^3 is enough cargo space for most things I try and do (PI collections, shifting stuff I manufacture to point of sales, etc). As for collecting scattered goods from my buy orders, if I need some for manufacturing I tend to cherry pick (just get what I need from where ever has the most plus any systems I fly through on-route). When I do a big round up of scattered goods, again I use the Prorator but this time I collect a full cargo hold, then deliver it to handy station.Once I have done this, I will run round all the 'handy systems' with my freighter and get the stuff home.

The only thing I use my Bestower for these days is to support mining ops.

+1: Never thought of the dual setup for the blockade runners…

As I am living in nulsec most of my career, I have different needs on transport as well:

If I only move my PI stuff from one planet to the next or to the station, I am careful about enemies close by and use my Bestower, since she has an enourmous cargo-space (fully rigged & expanded) and also use her for Hauling during mining OPs.

For transporting stuff around nullsec / into highsec for sale (like more than one jump) I now have a Viator - she's a tough bitch. Warping cloaked and with some extras inside she is fast and secure - as secure as you can be.

But my idea about flying is FUN: Do you enjoy making ISK that way? I remember flying on autopilot and learning and doing a mission now and then, when I was still "young". And when exam-time comes again I might force myself back to this to keep me from playing too much ;)

But do you really enjoy this?

This part of the game is definitely not that fun… But I have had plenty instances where I LMFAO. But like I said in some previous questions I’m doing all this whilst training my PVP main up to a decent level of skills. The idea is to have a ton of ISK so I can regularly lose expensive ships and not have to worry about it… paying for my accounts would be a nice plus as well but is not imperative. But at least this way I’m experiencing every facet of EVE. Next I plan to get into production… I already do PVE with my main and through my alts I have good experience in trading and hauling.
