I have been searching for this, but could only find beta stuff which might be a bit off...
So how good is this skill ? I plan on setting up PI in 0.0 so I think it could matter to skill a bit more of that baby if it's any good of course ;)

I went onto test with my alt who has no PI skills but lots of learning sp back.
I took level 1 in Planetology and looked at the default view of a randomly picked planet in high sec after scanning for Carbon Compounds.
I slid the scan bar down until the first white(ish) area appeared then took a screenshot.
I then took level 2 of Planetology, rescanned and took another screenshot.
So on up to Planetology 4, then did Adv Planetology 1-4, then Planetology 5 then lastly Adv Planetology 5. I figured this is how I would train the skills myself if I were to do them all.
The progression is quite interesting with some white areas shrinking and even disappearing at higher levels. Is this a measure of false readings or maybe just inaccuracies? Maybe fiddling with the scan bar at these levels would show more but I wanted all the shots to have the same level.
But it is quite clear that levels 1-4 in both are worth it. I am not sure the level 5s are quite worth it for the time spent unless you really are keen! Although looking again the pictures I see several little hot spots appearing with Adv Planetology 5.
I also note much more significant changes from extra levels of Adv Planetology than with Planetology.
Anyway, here is the picture.
I think its the length of it that is causing the problem – I’ll make 2 rows and repost it.
Sounds like the best answer possible to me ;) thx for sharing !
PS : any high rez link ? Cause flickr is kinda limited (when you are not a member I would guess).
I wondered exactly the same when I started PI-ing, so I took a screenshot then, which was a month ago, and another one tonight.
First, this is before I learned any planetology stuff, and this is after.
The first thing that springs to the eye is the eastern pool I couldn't even see in first shot. It could be because it is too localized... or it could just have spawn some time in the last month, as P0 deposits are dynamical resources. Yet I don't believe too much in that last part, since no one other than me has exploited this spot for at least two months.
More interesting, but you have to squint your eyes a bit hard on those pics to see it, is that the "steps" are much thinner too, with more shades for each color. I find that particularly helpful in the deep red-to-white range.
Anyway, I'd advise on testing the new extraction mechanism, which will make it to TQ with the last part of Incursion and is available on Sisi, as it offers a radically different approach to P infrastructure placement.
Thanks for the reply, that’s what made me wonder too : are those things dynamic ? Given that once setup you can’t really move stuff around, would CCP have made it so difficult that it would require you to resetup the whole thing ?
Also you seem to have an extra spot on the far left of your screenshots…
This question explored further and answered in part by link to another STC question here: http://skilltrainingcomplete.com/questions/5271/is-any-game-mechanic-of-planetary-interaction-dynamic-besides-rate-of-resource-re.
The eve-wiki does implicitly state that some hotspots will only show up with higher levels of Planetology/Adv Planetology. I can't link it at the moment as the site is blocked at work.
It does also say that, as mentioned by Fuyu'no, that the bands of colour will be thinner and more defined.
When I first set my PI up I only had level 3/4 in Planetology but I have now brought both skills up to level 4 in anticipation of the new system. To see how much effect it has had I will take Remote Sensing 1 on my alt and compare the views of the same planet from the characters and post some screenshots.
Just adding comment to my question as the first replies might be a bit off.
I understand what it does, my question was abit more subjective : can I expect substancials profits from training it further than 3 ?
