How should I invest my ISK?

Right now I don't want to play EVE as a business game--though it looks quite interesting as a mode of play. As a non-trader what can I do with my ISk to make them work for me?

With 1B isk or so, one investment to look at is BPO research.

Buy a BPO for something large, research it for a month and then resell it for more.

The other approach with a BPO is research it for a month and then make BPCs from it and sell those.

Either way, this involves relatively little activity on your part and is something of a long term investment with returns.

Maybe you should give eve online hold-em a shot? If I were you, I would trust my own skills at poker odds than a helpful stranger for an investment. EVE is riven with scammers. I don't know if many would think that the level of isk you mention represents much of a money return in most cases, which also recommends the EOH hold 'em route by my lights.

While I know hold ‘em I don’t think I am a good enough player to make serious money at it. Additionally that is actively playing to get money. The advantage of an investment is I give the money to someone else and they play with it.

Ah, I see! In this case, please send me 300,000 isk or more and I will convert it to hold ‘em winnings on your behalf, minus my incredibly reasonable broker’s fee, and I absolutely guarantee to return a percentage of your investment regardless of the actual outcome of my hand. (Zero is a percent. Past performance is not a valid basis for predicting future earnings. Some limitations may apply. Reasonableness may be wholly unreasonable by some pilots’ definition. Not enforceable in all states – sorry Tennessee.)

Charity begins at home - what about skill books, for yourself. Your characters knowledge is the only permanent resource you have.

I should be good on skill books for a couple of months—at least. And I am sitting on about a billion ISK. Other than capital ship skill books, I have the costs well covered. A chunk of that will be going into a Vargur—but I expect to have at least a couple of hundred million out that I can play with while getting the funds together to faction fit the Vargur. If I can earn some interest on them while accumulating more capital, good.
