How to choose a carrier?

Asked by

How important are the specific carrier bonuses? Let’s say you had to choose between an Archeon and a Nidhoggur for a 60/40 split of solo and fleet ops.

If you’ll be using your carrier to do any sort of remote repping with other carriers, you’ll want either the Chimera (Shield) or the Archon (Armour) for a couple reasons. The range bonus for energy transfer on those two carriers makes a gigantic difference over the other two, because you can’t generally perma-run the reppers without a cap buddy. Also, the Chimera and the Archon have a resist bonus to their tanks which is key to any RR group. The higher your resistances the more effective the reps landing on you are.

For pure damage output the Thanatos is the best because its bonus is to fighter damage. Most people who plan to solo drop other ships would use a Thanatos. If you plan to solo, it’s more important to kill your target as quickly as possible, not be able to last as long as possible. If you don’t get in and get out quick you will get tackled and counter-dropped guaranteed.

The Nidhoggur isn’t bad if you plan only to do rep support for mixed fleets, but that’s a little unrealistic and the Nidhoggur is probably the least used carrier in combat situations.

Note also that the Archon cannot be used to rep up shields, which means it can’t fill some suicide POS/outpost repping roles like the other three can.

The Archon (and to a lesser extent the Thanatos) benefit greatly by the armour improvements given by Slave implants, whereas the correspending shield implants, Crystals, don’t work on capital ships)

logic I have never used attribute implants for capitals, the hardwiring for sure, but given the cost of a set of slaves and how often Carrier’s die…. Do you find the risk vs reward worth doing? I generally use Boosters to get an edge in capital combat. Now a super Capital on the other hand I can totally understand splashing out on Slaves for.

logic To some Archon owners without a full corp replacement policy, it might sound like a boon that it can’t do suicide POS/Outpost repping ;–)
