How would you go about scouting 0.0 / WH space

Hey,

I'd like to go out scouting 0.0 and WH space a bit, to see what I can find, especially on the lookout for some quiet systems. Now I'm looking for ideas about how to do that.

I'd like to be as safe as possible (pref. cloaked, so Cov. Ops. comes to mind, makes for a good observation platform, Stealth Bomber maybe), but also have some cargohold and salvager in case I'd find anything ISK'ish :D. Probes should also be onboard for WH space exploration.

Anyone got some good ideas and ship's to go about this? Or general ideas to look into?

A covert ops ship should do fine. You should be able to fit most things you need for exploration on it, except for DPS. I wouldn't use a stealth bomber if you are planning on doing scanning and exploration, as the bonuses on a covops ship will make life much easier,as will the amount of mid slots for hacking/archaeology.

First, note that if you are cloaked, moving within 2 km of any object will decloak you.

The thing you need to watch out for in 0.0 (and W-space, to a lesser extent), are bubbles. If you're flying a covert ops ship that can warp cloaked, there are two scenarios in which you can get caught:

1. Jumping through a gate into an enemy fleet with a bubble up. In this case, you'll want to align toward a celestial close to the side of the bubble that you spawn on, then hit MWD and cloak at the same time. Keep spamming warp in order to warp off as soon as you get outside the bubble.

This will get you out 95% of the time, unless the enemy fleet has lots of fast tackle to decloak you, or yuo make a mistake.

2. Warping into a catch or drag bubble and getting decloaked by enemy ships/cans/drones. In 0.0, people like to set up bubbles in front of or behind gates, aligned with other celestials in the system, usually the other gate(s) that people will be warping from. They will set up jetcans and have drones out to decloak you.

To avoid getting caught in a catch (in front of the gate) or drag (behind the gate) bubble, you need to be warping to another celestial in the system before warping to the outbound gate. I do not recommend the sun or stations, as I often set up drag bubbles to catch from them as well. Pick a moon/planet/asteroid belt.

The other option for avoid all of this is to use a strategic cruiser (T3). Fit the covert and interdiction nullifier subsystems so you can warp cloaked and be immune to bubbles - you will be almost impossible to catch. This is a much more expensive option, though.

Lastly, if you plan to be moving through a particular region of 0.0 often, I highly recommend making on-grid tactical bookmarks (there are lots of other names for them). These are bookmarks 250-300 km from a gate, unaligned with any celestials. These will allow you to warp to a safe spot off a gate, observe it, then warp down and avoid any catch or drag bubbles. Don't make them any further away, as you might then be off-grid and unable to observe anyone on the gate.

I might also add one thing.

If you jump through a gate into an enemy fleet and they don’t put up a bubble, look to see if they have light or heavy interdictor before warping off. Often they will wait until try to warp before putting up a bubble, which will cancel your warp and stop you dead in your tracks, making it easier for them to decloak you.

Always align/MWD/cloak if you see a bubbler there so you keep on moving even if they pop a bubble.

I’m actually quite impressed with the T3’s. Didn’t take a closer look until now, but those are nice ships! Until I can afford one, I think my Cov Ops will have to do… That’s if I can find the courage to use that expensive T3 for such adventerous times… ;)

Great answer. I enthusiastically endorse the covops.

The Gallente Proteus in my opinion is made for a solo scouting 0.0 / WH space. If you are taking time and effort to explore these areas, you want to be able to maximise the return by being able to dish out some hurt as well as tank it. I did not go for the Covert / Interdiction nulifier as it restricted my low layout so you do have to take care when jumping through systems, another reason why I tend to use WH space to gain access to low / 0.0 space: See enclosed fit, I hope it helps -:

High 3 x Heavy electron blaster II Sisters Probe launcher Salvager II Covert Ops Cloak

Med 10MN Microwarpdrive II Analyser Code Breaker

Low 1600mm reinforced rolled plate II x 2 DCS II Corelum C-type Nano Membrane Centum A-type energised Membrane Fed Navy Field Stabilizer x 2

Drones Warrior II x5 Hammerhead II x5

Sub systems Engineering Power core multiplier Propulsion Localized injectors Offensive Hybrid propulsion armature Electronics Emergent Locus Analyser Defensive Augmented plating

Rigs Medium Trimark Armour Pump x3

A Covert Ops with a Cloack, Expanded Probe Launcher, MWD, some Nanos and a salvager should do fine in most cases. Don't warp directly from Gate to Gate because the chance a Bubble is positioned in that Route is quite high, take a short detour via a Planet or the Sun.

If you have enough ISKs to spend on this Project take a T3 Ship with Scanning, Covert and Interdiction Nullifier subsystems and you have the perfect scout and probing ship that is even immune to bubbles.

All the answers here are good. A CovOps ship will handle almost everything you need, except any combat. A strategic cruiser can be used as a CovOps replacement, but additionally it will be able to hold its own in a small fight.
