I'm thinking about quitting WoW to join Eve

I've never played a spaceship game but I'm sick of WoW. How will I know if it is for me?

welp

If you play eve like it's wow, you're going to hate it. If you're willing to risk your ships and the time you put into making isk to get them, you'll find you actually feel adrenaline when you fight, rather than just grinding time away. Also, the corps are the best part of the game, so the first thing you should do is find a corp that recruits new players and does pvp, and be as attentive and listen as much as possible. Even a mining corp that could use combat players is a better option than sitting by yourself and doing missions, or joining a corp that only does missions and never does anything fun. You could also try RvB, search for the corporations Red Federation or Blue Republic ingame, and join the channel R-V-B to ask questions and learn more (had to pimp RvB bros)

If you like the idea of merciless grind, you can stay in wow or come to eve, you'll find it in both.

If you enjoy cameraderie, outsmarting your enemy, and hunting people in space, join eve

If you don't cry over lost ships and can keep your rage silently in check, you should join eve. If you can't do either of these things, you should also join eve, but make sure to post on the EvE-Online forums as much as possible.

EVE is very different from a lot of other MMOs - you're not led along a static path of quests and upgrades. It's much more freeform, which is both good and bad since you're not told what to do and are basically turned loose upon the universe once the tutorial is complete. Some people hate this, some people love it.

Go to www.eve-online.com and create an account and give it a try. Make sure you complete all of the tutorials and join a player corporation (EVE University is a good one - they're there specifically to help new players). And don't limit yourself to just PvE activities - PvP is the best part of EVE Online.

Good luck!

Eve will kick you in the nuts and make you ragelog multiple times. I remember saving up to buy a Raven battleship for ratting. I painstaking scraped together the cash and researched all the right mods. It was expensive but I had no doubts that it would pay for itself in no time. I also remember the anger I felt when it got blown up by pirates when I was trying to get it to the system I wanted to rat in. Intense anger...

However I also remember my first solo PvP kill. It was a very intense feeling of adrenaline to get into combat knowing that one ship won't make it. The feeling of satisfaction after I won was just as intense. That is Eve. There are rough moments but that just makes the good moments that much better.

Jump in.

Try buying your first Tech III ship only to have it popped the first jump into low sec. (500mil down the drain) And not only that, it was a bull&%^! lag death too, didn’t even fire a single missile :(

oh and btw I came from WOW, got sick of the fact that if your not online your not getting anywhere, unlike eve’s training schedule and now EVE Gate! But yes you will wanna punch the screen when you lose a ship, you don’t just turn into a shadow and have to repair your armor that you had before you died.LOL

Having recently made the jump from WOW to Eve (June 2010) I can offer the following:

  • Eve is like a WOW PVP server where everyone else is the OPPOSING race.
  • High Sec(urity space) is like fighting in newbie zones near guards in Cities.
  • Low Sec is like fighting in home or neutral territory.
  • Null Sec and Wormhole Space is like fighting in enemy territory.
  • Anyone can (try to) kill you at any time, anywhere in space.
  • Corporation = Guild.
  • Everyone plays on the same live server.
  • There are no UI Addons. The EVE UI is considerably more complex.
  • There are no "instances portals" you can hide in to avoid PVP, but you can dock in a station.
  • There are no WASD controls in EVE, its all click to move.
  • The economy/market is much bigger and more complex than the auction house you're used to in WOW.
  • You never get all your equipment back when you "die" (lose a ship) in EVE -- and quite often you don't get any of it back. Upside - nothing is bind-on-pickup or bind-on-account, so you can usually replace it all, at considerable cost.
  • Missions in Eve = quests in WOW.
  • There are a few "quest lines" in Eve, the "Epic Mission Arcs".
  • In WOW you gain skills automatically by doing, in EVE you choose to gain particular skills over time.
  • Skills in Eve = levels in WOW.
  • Eve Standings = Wow Reputation.
  • and finally... You will want to study the Eve learning curve compared to WOW et. al.: http://www.ahmadhisyam.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/learningcurve.jpg

Coming from World of Warcraft myself, I might be able to give in some help.

First a bit of background : WoW was my first MMO, I started the game during latest beta before the launch of the game.

Made it through "vanilla" up to the beginning of Naxxramas. Then played more "casual" during Burning Crusade (up to tempest keep / Lady Vashj in SSC).

I started EvE in 2008, but I did quit because I missed my friend ;) Back on EvE for a few months since I got kinda sick of wow (it still is a good game though) and most my friends did quit.

What will be the most disturbing for you at first (at least it was for me) :

  • There is no goal
  • There is no way to figure out what your corpmates are doing.

While I was already familiar with the first one, and spend a lot of time into planning what I wanted to do, the second one was very disturbing for me at first. In who you simply open up guild tab and see where people are :

"Alterac Valley ?" Okay that guy is PVP "Ironforge" Ok he is at the auction house or reseting his talents and so on

From that, it was easy to come forth and ask people to group and start doing something.

In EvE you need others to tell you what they are doing, and you need to ask them of course ;)

At first it's very disturbing, cause despite being in a corp, it looks a bit "lonely" (your mileage may vary depending on how "chatty" your corpmates are).

Appart from that, the game is more complicated that's for sure. But if you have a good raiding experience from wow, there is nothing you cannot handle (wow is a pretty good tutorial, for what it's worth).

Well, main difference between WoW/any-other-fantasy-MMO and EVE is that you don't have to play hard to improve your character. The only need you have to fulfill online is ingame cash which means ships, modules, expensive skillbooks, and finally paying for you game time with ingame money. The rest of your time is all yours to do whatever you want rather then getting some boring "exp". Lots of possible activities, trading and manufacturing are much more massive, comfortable and complicated. WoW is kinda "hit 80 level and then raid, raid, raid". EVE is much, much more. But if you don't like complications, thorough planning, learning and systemizing lots of information - this game is not too good for you =) Unless you join some corp and PvP not thinking too much but doing everything they tell you to do.

There's a lot of people asking if Eve is fun, and dissing it after a while. "It's like a job you pay", "It's the most beautiful spreadsheet you'll ever see", "It sucks, no fun", etc. Since everyone is writing about it, I'd like to share my take on it. The thing about Eve is that this is a game for grown ups. I realized that after I gave up a year ago and came back this January. In November 2009, after seeing again some episodes of Farscape and Firefly, I got that old itch to play some space combat games again. I searched and played a lot of games, from Tie Fighter to X3. The thing is, most of them are cartoonish. Over-satured backgrounds. Lame ship designs. Cockpits with too much colour, too much lights blinking, too much plastic. Those games felt and played like toys. Suddenly I received an message from CCP. Oh, right. Eve. I remember that game. What the heck, let's give that one more try. And then I got it. Eve feels real. The ships feel real: the hurricane, for one, looks like an old, battered warrior. Looks and feels heavy and sturdy. The other ships scares the hell out of you, specially in low sec. The universe feels like a fcking huge Universe, with different cultures and interactions and things happening. The cosmos is fevering with life. And the most important, Eve doesn't underestimate the player's intelligence. Whatever the heck you want to try you can. It's amazing. I mined, I scanned, I taunted other players Battleships with a Reaper, I scaped with minimum structure left, I died a lot, I pirated, I stoled, I fought pirates...

If you're thinking of a trial shoot me an email and I'll sent you a 21 day trial (7 days longer). Email: Stylescd@gmail.com

it's a great game, but very different from WoW.

this link here is a great (and long) article that gives a basic understanding of what eve is, as told to a non-eve gamer. i read it before i started eve, and it got me really interested.
i used to play WoW as well, many years ago, so i know where you're coming from.
i suggest reading the article, and trying out the free 14 day trial.
it might turn out to be the best choice you ever took as a gamer :)

This is not a answer to your entire question but, I suggest you think about putting in an application to EVE Academy. They really do help new players to understand the game and from what I have seen\understand some decent (if not well educated) players come out of that corp.

If WOW is to easy for you, start eve. if you hate grinding, start eve. if you liked the pvp part of wow the most, start eve. lastly if you dont like the mostly solo element of WOW, start eve.

Just a word of warning however eve makes WOW look like a childs game compared to eve it in difficulty. It will kick you in the balls many times and do it twice even more times but thats what makes the game great it gives you an adrinalin rush when you can ACTUALY LOSE SOMETHING when you die so that gives a great incintive not to.

Also dont expect to go anywhere fast it takes years to become "good" at anything in eve so dont expect to be "epic" in a few months of playing becuase its not guna happen actualy you most likely never will as there will ALWAYS be someone better.

Well, lets take it from another side: why do WoW players hate EVE and quit it?

  • its complex. Get used to it
  • you need at least 2 weeks to learn the basics. You need to fight through it
  • prepare to loose everything. Either due to PvP or to scams
  • if your age<25 your chance to quit Eve is higher, i.e. the playerbase in Eve is older than WoW, which actually is good
  • Corps (aka Guilds) are run differently in Eve. Join one asap, helps getting in love with eve, even if its a bad corp
  • if you aren't self motivated, i.e. you need quests to tell you where to go, don't play Eve.
