Is there a way to protect overview settings from blowing up for random reasons?

Every once in a while (WAY too frequently), some random element of my overview settings changes. For example, if I switch tabs between PVP and PVE or DRONES or whatever, often the settings for that tab are superimposed onto some or all of the other tabs. Most of the time I can just reload the saved settings for that tab, but if I'm in the middle of a fight, I don't have the time to dick around with overview settings and opt to just delete the extra items with the "Remove xxx from overview" right-click option. If this goes on for too long before I clean up my mess, I sometimes ruin the saved settings and have to do them over again. Is there a way to either prevent the overview from screwing up like that, or backing up overview settings to be recovered when needed?

I haven't actually seen this issue occur personally, so I can't speak to any particular prevention strategies.

However, you CAN back up the overview by clicking on the triangle at the top of the Overview Window and selecting "Export Overview Settings" from the dropdown menu. This will generate an XML file somewhere on your computer (My Documents/EVE/Overview, for me) that you can hold onto and import whenever you'd like.

This is also useful if you've got a particularly useful set of tabs that you'd like to share with others.

I have seen this occur as well with overview settings (and other less critical like player image cache, etc.). CCPs coding is unfortunately unclean.

I second the suggestion to export the XML once you have it set how you like. It does seem to help with overview stability; at a minimum it makes reloading settings easier and guarantees you get back to where you want to be in one quick step.
