Level 5 Missions

I've been told by my friend that level 5 missions are not worth the time. They are very difficult and time consuming for little reward. However, being a naturally curious person I'm always interested in trying new things. Can anyone brief me on level 5 missions?

I know that most, if not all, include energy neutralizers, so my Amarr ships would be fairly well negated. Obviously this means serious cross training for me. Unless you know something I don't?

I've read that the LP rewards are fairly ludicrous, does this do anything to balance the time and difficulty?

They're about as profitable, if not more, than L4 missions. However, due to the difficulty, usually people do them in a group. You can solo them, though, and if you do, you won't be disappointed. 80% of the rewards are in the form of LP, so if you do a little research into how to maximize the return from LP sales, you are all set. People make anything from 800 to 5000 isk/LP (different NPC corp LPs involved there), so your mileage depends on the footwork and research you do.

Going straight in with an Amarr laser boat will just make you mad. Some web sites have writeups of many of the level 5 missions so you can get a quick glance at what you'll be facing. Doing so will save you a lot of money. I've had best luck going in with a Nighthawk with a tank built for that specific mission. I stick around long enough to wipe out the neut towers, frigs, and other yard trash before coming back in a Paladin to finish up and loot. Where L4 missions will pay you in bounties and loot, L5 missions will almost always pit you against another of the 4 main factions so you get tags instead of bounties. Financially, this doesn't change much but the hit you take against the faction in the mission is very steep. After just a couple of days, you may find yourself KOS in half of empire. I learned this the hard way while tabbed out of game on autopilot.

Ouch. I’ve lost things that way to, Min Republic hates me. I’ll play with the Nighthawk idea though. I don’t have any cross training yet but I suppose Caldari/Amarr would set me up for Sansha ships one day.
