Lowsec - What are your impressions

I would like to know your general views on low security space. Is it worth it? Is it dangerous? Is it blobby? Is it fun? Are you scared of jumping into lowsec? etc (please don't regard these as the only questions).

Please specify in your answers:

  1. Approximately how long you have been playing eve.
  2. How frequently you have travelled, fought or explored (or done other things) in lowsec.
  3. How proficient you think you are at pvp (yes, we are all experts, I know... try be a little honest).

Go!

This could be seen as subjective and potential argumentative but we can see what kind of answers we get.

Interesting question, no doubt, but as there is no clear answer it has been converted to a community wiki.

I agree – thanks for sorting out the community wiki thing. I didn’t think of it.

Whoops, meant to add that I am still looking for answers from newer / less experienced players. Thanks

Worth it? It's reasonable ISK depending on how organised you are and if you're in FW or not. FW missions are good ISK. There's also exploration, holes and payout from normal missions tends to be higher.

Dangerous? Ish. But High-sec isn't exactly safe. A lot of low-sec is really, really empty. Pirates homesystems and frequently camped chokepoints are the most dangerous. You can't be completely oblivious to your surroundings like a lot of bears are. Local, scanner, safes. All basic stuff really. You also cannot move big ships unscouted. I consider this stuff SOP for all of EVE though.

Blobby? With some exceptions a lot of PVP in EVE is what I'd consider attempted "ganks" (by this I mean an attempt to leverage some advantage or other). Very few people engage in a fight they think they're gonna lose. Low-sec is no exception to this. Pirate gangs are often ~5-10 but the larger corps or alliances can run MUCH bigger gangs.

Fun? Do you like shooting people?

I rarely go in highsec.

  1. 2007.

  2. I am usually either in lowsec or nullsec. My corp has pretty good logistics so I don't even have to shop in highsec now.

  3. I'm OK. Look me up on Battel Clinique if you want that quantifying. 1700-ish atm but playing a lot of other games.

  1. Since beta, but with a 2 year break from 2007 - 2009
  2. I have characters that live in Hi/Lo/0.0
  3. Well my efficiency on KB is 97% over several hundred kills but I wouldn't consider myself the best, as in reality I owe alot of these stats to my FCs than myself.

That out of the way.

Low-Sec, depends what you want from it.

Income wise you are better off in 0.0 Combat wise, you are better off in 0.0 however if you don't mind the standing hit, there is plenty of fun to be had from low-sec combat.

If you are a Hi-Sec player by nature the exact reverse is true.

Annie's points are pretty much there, people tend to find low-sec a bit of no mans land, 0.0 people tend to forget it's not hi-sec and get themselves ganked, hi-sec players tend to not understand how dangerous it is and get themselves popped in their freighter on the hi-sec gate.

plenty of kills to be had, fleet composition wise a full 0.0 battlefleet is not necessarily the way forward if you are hunting, people see local climb by 50-200 people they are all going to go safe up. Therefore baiting and nano roams tend to be more successful, either that or gank fleets tend to be camps on hi-sec gates or other choke points.

we had an operation in my alliance a while back to gank the ganking fleets, that was fun and required a full fleet form up, but apart from that combat is on a smaller scale then 0.0 even if it follows the same rules. If you are a 0.0 combat pilot low sec offers a change of pace from 0.0 nice for a relaxed roam that has no consequences for errors other than loss of your ship, good for a giggle is basically my point of view, also good to show new pilots the ropes, and for more relaxed fleet comms and general laugh environments.

I've played EVE for two years. I've been in nullsec for the past year, and before that I was moving between highsec, lowsec and W-space. I'm part of a pure small gang PvP corp (fairly confident in PvP, although still a lot to learn).

Personally, I reckon lowsec is pretty tedious and a poor substitute for nullsec. I really dislike having to worry about gateguns, sec status, etcetera. I like to just have good fights without having to think about lowsec mechanics too much.

Plus, one of the greatest tactical features in EVE cannot be used in low sec - bubbles. Bubbles make it much, much easier to get fights and also make it a lot easier to dictate the terms of the engagement. There's also a lot more scope for different tactics in nullsec, whereas the PvP in lowsec is fairly homogenous.

Put it this way: I feel almost as safe going through lowsec in something smaller than a BC, as I do in highsec.

That said, I have a lot of respect for pirates who operate in lowsec. They know their stuff in terms of game mechanics and they like the idea of being renegades. I don't want to be bagging anyone here.

Just a note, LowSec has strategic value to 0.0 alliances due to the nature of controlling supply routes. Except for in the rare instances where you can jump straight into 0.0 you need to get supplies into Lowsec, PL, Goons and others are well known for trying to disrupt supply lines in lowsec rather than attacking soverign territory directly.

Some fun fights to be had just there alone.

I have no doubt there is fighting in lowsec, but it’s not really the small-gang PvP haven it should be. I’ve found that most of the fights are ganks and most of the tactics are cookie-cutter due to the restrictions the game mechanics impose in low sec.

But yeah, this is a very subjective sort of question, so take my comments with a very large grain of salt. :P

It’s supposed to be a watered-down transition to nullsec, but it’s really nothing like nullsec at all.

My corp and I live in lowsec. I highly recommend it if you enjoy killing other player ships + PVE for missions or Plexes.

  1. Played EVE for 3 years.
  2. Spent about 1 year living in low sec.
  3. I would say I'm 8 out of 10 proficient at PVP.
