More than 100% resistance?

Is there any diference in having, lets say, a shield em resist of 100% or 120%?

Its actually impossible to get resists to 100%.

Each additional resist piece takes that percentage from the the amount left.

Mathematically it looks like this: resists = 1 - ((1 - r1)(1 - r2)(1 - r3)...))

Lets say that you have a ship with 50% EM resists. You add a hardener that gives 50% EM resists.

So that would be 1 - ((1 - 0.50)(1 - 0.50)) = 1- ((0.50)(0.50)) = 1 - 0.25 = .75 or 75% resists.

While the hardener only increased your resists by 50%, it did double your effective EM HP. (Before the hardener it took 2 points of EM damage to do 1 point of damage to the shields, with the hardener it takes 4 points of EM damage to do 1 HP of damage.)

Various bits of your resist gear will also have stacking penalties (diminishing returns) too.

hmm, very interesting… I was calculating it like a plus thing, now it makes much more sense.

Great question too. I think its one of the first here to get more than 2 votes.

It's actually not possible to get a resist over 100% in eve. All modules are stacked with diminishing results. for a resist module that says 55% resist, you are actually getting 55% better resists, not 55%+base resists. But in general, the higher the resists the better, anything above 85-90% resists is considered very strong, IE Heavy Assault Cruiser resists.

Even if there weren’t any stacking penalty / diminishing returns involven it world not be possible to reach 100%

even the GM-flown polaris frigates only have 99.99% resists. 100% or better simply isn't possible because of the way resistances are calculated.
