Names for Fleet Types

I've heard a lot of different names for Fleet Types, Fist Fleet (from what I understood Armor HACs with AB that do direct damage), Viper Fleet (Drakes and Logi(?)), Cobra Fleet, Voodoo Fleet, ...

Can anyone explain this (and more if exist) names and what Ships and tactics are normally used in this fleets?

If anyone knows what PL’s HELLCATs are I’d be obliged…

HELLCATs, per a Eve News 24 comment, seem to be their standard fit (as evinced by their killmails) Abaddon).

Depends on the corp or allaince, the name really means nothing, i have had significant experience as a null sec fleet commander and to me a good fleet description will outdo a name any day, and is a neccesity for a fleet.

Also corps and alliances have their own names if they do't want spies knowing what fleets they have and how many people. As i said before though the names really mean nothing as you don't choose a null sec fleet by it's name you join it by the description

E.g. name of fleet- euu-4n defense fleet

description- hacs>logi>tackle>anything else

the > sign indicating teh most needed or wanted type of fleet. Also most helpful is a knowledge of what people like you to do in a fleet, for example if you fly a logi and can do it well people will expect you to bring it even if it is not expresly stated in the fleet description.

Well people often have there own nicknames for fleet types and they are not always the same throughout Eve.

Where I come from...

"Wolfpack" refers to frigate hull sized fleets.

"Fishing" fleet refers to inties tackling on a gate (ie as bait) surrounded by cloaked up bombers, all ready to attack anyone that bites.

"Shiney" fleet - expensive ships!

"Suicide" fleet - a fleet op that doesnt end until everyone is dead... might be a corp only thing tbh :P

"Sniper" fleet - self explanatory, long range ships.

But then you also have nicknames for ships with specific set-ups too. It is all pretty subjective tbh though I sort of see what you are getting at.

Well the name of hte fleet typically comes from the FC. Sorry but this question is a bit too subjective to answer to be honest.

I could name my fleet anything I liked, however it wouldn't be related to its purpose. Why give away intel?

Hm, I heard this Names from completely different groups so I thought there are some common used names.

If I told you how I named some of my fleets I’d probably get banned from this website :P

I haven’t heard anything about fleet types given a spontaneous common nomenclature in Eve. I have, however, read about the flavors Btek describes from the same and other sources.

There are various flavour-of-the-month fleet setups out there at the moment. The ones I know of, from reading SHC and Eve News 24 are:

  • Armor-HACs (pulse Zealots) and Guardians
  • Drake blob and Scimitars

which lead to counters such as the Firewall BS fleet, deploying Kinetic smart bombs to kill Drake missiles, and PL's Hellcats, which I have no idea about.

And don't forget your command ships for fleet boosting.

I'm with ilusionist on this one, its very aliance dependant.

Some fleets are descriptive of what they do, for instance firewall fleets, or Armour HAC

Some are acronyms, some are just designed to strike fear with the name or to sound cool...

As for asking re:PL Hellcats are Pandemic Legion fleets, that much I can tell you:

Now my personal view I'm guessing they are desinged to be hit and run ships, hit hard move fast, but this is just speculation, it depends on the FC who created them, it may be a name after the FC who devised the tatic, it depends on a lot of things. PL tend to be very good tatical fighters, so I would expect them to have a very distinct role within their Flotilla.

Personally I prefer fleet names that tell me what I'm signing up for, nothing worse then signing up for a fleet called I don't know... "George and the AllStars" and turns out it's a pos bash :o( lol.

Sorry if it's a vauge answer but Fleet setups tend to be guarded secrets, and I wouldn't want to get anyone or myself in trouble by divulging anything sensetive even if it is in the name of education.

There are a few fairly standard fleet types with names. Some have already been mentioned, here are a few more:

"Drake swarm" is pretty self explanatory. "Zealot swarm" ditto, though zealot swarms are often sniper fit.

"Spider fleet" is a fleet where everything is repping everything else, making any individual member very hard to kill. Usually seen with BS and above. Carrier spider fleets are exceptionally vicious, because removing any one carrier before the reps can get on it requires enormous damage output.

"Firewall" is a fleet type popularized by The Initiative as a counter to Drake swarms. It consists of a ball of smartbombing BS to take out incoming missiles, protecting a creamy nougat center of logistics and sniper BS.

"Blob" is a catch-all for any fleet that is just big, and is what most people call any 60+ member fleet that isn't described by some other term. Most 0.0 fleets are blobs made up of smaller fleets with some of the above elements, for example. In hisec, the most common blob is the "Uni blob," a big E-UNI fleet consisting of pretty much whatever its members can fly and a lot of ECM.

Those are the common ones, and like people have said there are many other that are defined on a more alliance-by-alliance or corp-by-corp basis.

To be honest, if it is 2 against 1 it’s called a blob these days.

Anytime anyone uses more than one’s own ship to beat someone else, whatever the context and circumstances, it seems the loser whines about being blobbed. Hello; that’s called being tactically outmaneuvered unless you are in a mutually agreed upon duel. Talk about your tears. The people who fuss about tears the most are the worst about crying in my experience.
