Nearly 5 years old and wondering what ship should I go for next!

Asked by [ Editor ]

Ecaf will turn 5 years old in the early part of next year and is due to pass 65m sp in a few days time.

He does a variety of things quite well and has spent since January 2010 training up all the Engineering, Electronics and Mechanic skills to bring those up to a good level before remapping out all his Intelligence and Memory in favour of maxing Perception and Willpower in order to get on with some serious ship and weapons training. The IntMem plan is scheduled to be done by the end of the year a short while before his 5th birthday.

So to celebrate his birthday I want to train him for a shiny new ship but which one?

He is almost purely Gallente skilled with a few levels in Minmatar Frigate and Cruiser, mainly because I wanted a Hurricane.

He can fly all Gallente T1 ships except Dreadnought, Mothership and Titan, all Gallente T2 ships except Interdictor, Heavy Interdictor, Command Ship, Black Ops and Marauder. He can also fly Exhumers.

Motherships and Titans are out as he is far too useful to leave him sitting in one ship.

I don't fancy DICs or HICs and my alt flies those well anyway.

An Orca is not far away but I prefer to be in a Hulk on mining ops so that doesn't appeal so much. The same really applies for a Rorqual which I could get in very quickly although lacking in gang link modules.

I can train Dreadnought and Capital Turret right now so the only real training requirement for a Moros is Advanced Weapon Upgrades 5 that I need for the Siege Module.

I need Battlecruisers 5 for the Command Ship and still have no Warfare Link skills so there’s a fair bit of training needed for that.

Black Ops I need quite a bit as well for Covert Cynos and Jump Portals.

A Marauder I only need Advanced Weapon Upgrades 5 so a few weeks training for that.

There is also the T3 of course. I don't have any subsystem skills at all yet but they're only rank 1 skills.

The other option is to finally properly cross-train another race, but which one?

I have very good Hybrid and Drone skills and some Missile skills but almost nothing in Projectile and Energy turrets. All types of E-war skills will be up to scratch by January and my Shield and Armour tanking skills are both good although Shield could be topped a little more.

I'm stuck with too many toys on the shelf to choose from!

So any ideas or inspirations out there for me to open up a new box of fun?

If you have not flown T3 yet, I highly recommend that route - they are a lot of fun, and you can mix up your ship(s) in a variety of configurations. The subsystem skills are easy to train, and no reason not to get them all up to 5 (IMO). Train up Strategic Cruiser if you want to overheat your modules a lot. The one major downside is that you effectively loose a drone bay; it is possible to build a ship with a drone bay, but PLEASE do not - it will be ugly. After you build your ship, go solo a lvl 4, or head into a wormhole and try your hand at a C2 or a C3. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised what these guys can do.

Cross-training is another awesome way to go, but nobody can tell you which route to take. You have to decide that for yourself. Look at the faction ships and see which ones make you drool.

Good point on looking at the faction ships – you just reminded me that I always fancied a Machariel. It’d wouldn’t need Minnie BS 5 so not too long for level 4 but a while on Projectile turrets to make the most of the bonuses.

I decided that I am going to start cross-training starting with Minmatar. My shield and missile skills are OK and I have a levels in frigate and cruiser plus a few in projectiles. I could probably do Caldari quicker given I already have hybrids, missiles, shields and ECM but I really want a Machariel again now :–)

Machariels are sweet – more power to you. =)

I'd recommend cross-training into something else. Since each race has their own take on warfare, especially in T2 ships, you'll get to experience a new way of warfare.

You don't need Cyno's 5 in order to fly a black ops, in fact it's rare for it to have a covert cyno fitted, unless you are part of a jump chain to move ships accross the region or quadrant.

Is it just black ops ships themselves you can not fly?

As your Gallente the Arazu is a very impressive beast, with faction points you can reach out and grab targets at nearly 60 km and if you pair up with a Rapier the two ships can point and web someone at that range and orbit out of harms way... Infact, throw a lokki into the mix with a load of skirmish warefare links as well and that range can be made point up to 98km away.

Also so you know you only need JPG trained to 1 for black ops, as any more than that is only any use if you are going to be making titan bridges.

Basically if you can fly a carrier you wouldn't need much to get into a black ops ship, only thing is you generally don't actually do the blowing up with it :) unless you have too much isk! then its worth the risk, just treat the sin like a more fragile version of the domi and your away.

Already have the Arazu – it’s my favourite ship for when I don’t have a specific specialist task to complete. True with the Cyno 5 but I am in the habit now of trying to make the most of each ship type before I move on to something new.

Don’t get me wrong it’s a good skill to have, it also makes lighting a normal cyno fairly cheap :D you will find you drop the covert cyno in preference for something useful though… For instance my widow, is purely a non-combat ship, because I can’t afford to keep throwing them away. So loadout wise it has large shield and armour transporters to rep up the guys on return from a dog fight, loads of cap boosters and rechargers in the mids and Expanded cargo holds in the lows and rigs to hold more isotope, and one Cloak and a CJPG. ECM light drones and Warrior2’s to deal with unwanted visitors

Can u tank 10/10's? T3 might be your answer. You can train Gal, then another race since it's pretty quick. (Loki can tank DG and Serp 10/10's very well for a 2b fit, like never ever die)

Marauders are ok i guess.

Thanatos is usefull, Arcon and Nid are great for triage as well.

Or do what i did. Train all the frig/cruisers to 5, play with all of them.
