Orca ship bay for mission runners

One of the great things of the Orca is that it can carry around rigged ships in its ship maintenance bay. A good 400,000 m3 of ships worth.

For running solo missions (up to L3) and general pve type activities (including those dreaded veld belts), what is the best set of ships that will fit unpacked into 400,000 of space?

Some initial thoughts

  • Barges should be carried packaged rather than unpackaged and rigged. A covetor class hull is 200,000 m3 while packaged it is only 3750 m3 of space (to be held in the 30k m3 main hold).
  • Minmatar ships are likely the best choice. For a ship of the same class (for example Tier 2 battlecruiser), Hurricane - 216k, Harbinger - 234k, Drake 252k, Myrmidion 270k. 54k m3 of space can be quite significant (that is two rifters, or a rifter and a probe)

Please consider T1, T2, and T3 setups. While not everyone has a command ship a strategic cruiser, they are still things to aspire for. That said, I'm interested for T1 ships.

A workable T1 setup with Minmatar ships gives:

  • Hurricane (216,000 m3)
  • Rupture (96,000 m3)
  • Rifter (27,289 m3)
  • Probe (19,500 m3)

This is 358,789 m3 of space leaving just under 42 m3 of space left. Switching from a rupture to a stabber frees up another 16,000 m3. This is enough room for a few frigates for various specific tasks or a thrasher (43,000 m3) as a salvage ship.

I am not mission runner, I prefer exploration myself, but for the same reason I tried nomadic lifestyle one day. I had in my orca the following ships: Cheetah (covert ops for scanning), Hulk, some combat ship (Vagabond I think). I'd add a salvaging destroyer but I think I ran out of space by that moment.

I think there also was a shuttle or inty so I could quickly run to my corporation HQ when needed then get back to my base of operations.

Unless you also have an alt that can fly the Orca or the other ships in the bay, you will need to eject from the Orca to use another ship. This leaves your Orca vulnerable to someone slipping into the driver's seat and making off with a nice piece of kit. Another problem is a bug/glitch in transfer process where some modules are offline when you undock a ship from the bay.

In my case, I’m a solo nomadic mission runner. I used to package my unrigged fleet (cruiser/battlecruiser, frigate, barge) into a mammoth and then moved that around to a station, unpacked and then ran missions until I got to the next best agent and repeated the process. Now, the orca can pull them around rigged and unload them all in a station. The orca never goes to the mission site nor is sitting out there without a pilot.

Where are you operating?

Hi-sec you don't really need to transport stuff around, travel light, buy and sell ships you need as you move around; low-sec/contested null sec in an Orca - good luck; null with sov, I'll let you off.

An orca and collection of ships just seems like overkill to me unless you're role-playing. The skills training time and capital investment necessary would IMHO probably be better spent on a t3 cruiser, and a couple of variations of some of the subs which would be able to fulfil all the necessary roles except mining, and be much harder to catch i.e. interdiction nullifier, covert reconfiguration, and for scanning emergent locus analyzer.

Only problem with t3 is that at the moment you can only change subs in a station.

In my situation, I’m just going from corp to corp (and faction to faction) and building up standings. A not uncommon situation is moving from a 2+5 to a 3-10 agent or similar which is a 15+ jump distance. And I find myself wanting my passive hurricane for New Frontiers again. Buying and selling ships means they remain unrigged or at a loss each time. For a miner/missioner, the additional skills for an orca are not significant.
