I think I noticed the other day (was during first time in wspace with non-friendlies, didn't have time to study) that when I brought up my system map a couple different times(F10, but not star map), the orientation of the map had rotated. Now, I know that you can hold down left-mouse and rotate the system map, but I had not done that. I had only opened it, looked at tactical overlay, and closed it. I moved my camera around a bit(to aim directional scanner), and later opened the system map again. This is when I thought I had noticed that the system map had a different orientation. Was this related to my camera movement?

Yes it most likely was due to the camera movement. The universe has no logical compass points despite the general reference to the North and South areas of 0.0, eg. The Northern Coalition.
As far as I know there is no "centre" command that makes it point a certain way.
