random disconnects

I am currently having problems with eve and I am looking for a solution

Firstly I log in to eve and for a while everything is fine no problems but after varying lengths of time after I have been logged in my client becomes unresponsive and no information comes up when i open a new window (such as in the assets window none of my items appear). Then after another length of time with quite often is a long time I get the 'The Socket Is Closed' message.

Secondly I know this isn't a direct lost of internet connection as often I am running multiple clients and they don't always have the problem in close proximity to each other.

My OS is windows xp service pack 3.

Please if possible only put tested answers if possible.

Solution so far tried – I’ve tried removing the cache files I’ve tried the repair tools I’ve tried reinstalling the entire client

In that case I can only suggest getting help from CCP. They might be able to tell you what was happening at each d/c (if you can give them exact date/times) and maybe they can instruct you how to collect a logfile so that they can read it and tell you what caused your latest d/c, from a hardware point-of-view. File a bug report.

Thanks for the attempts at helping me everyone. I have filed a support petition direct to CCP and am still waiting on a reply. If the solution they give me works and it seems like it would work for a wide number of people I will post it here for the reference of other people.

I followed something like this through with a bug report once. The advice was to clear the cache files, which cured the issue for me.

If you press ESC before logging into the eve client, there is a page on the system screen that allows you to reset various cache files and settings. Clear it all out.

Of course, this means that your overview settings, window positions, bookmark folders, IGB favourites and various other things are removed and need to be setup again. I tried to be clever and make backups of everything I could by using the export options CCP provides, but the problem came back after I imported them so I cleared the cache files again and reset my options by hand when I got back into the game. Since then I have had no socket loss problems except when the server crashes.

have you tried reimporting stuff one by one, untill you figure out what file was corrupted ? Despite being tedious, it still saves you loads of time, especially for long timers with ALOT of bookmarks (and important ones with that) :D Not to mention overview settings ^^

The overview settings can be exported to a seperate backup file these days (thanks CCP!). The clear cache files creates a backup of everything before it clears them, so it should be possible to go in and find the old “Bookmark folders” setup, which was the thing I really hated having to redo from scratch! But I haven’t checked to see if it is possible to copy the BM folders seperately, though.

Before reinstalling from scratch, I would advise using the repair tool, could be faster.

Before trying to figure out why you get kicked when afking for a long time with only one client, we should try to figure out what gets you de-synched when running multiple clients.

Have you search eve forums for similar issues ?

I get that sometimes as well, but only after being afk for an extended period of time. I assumed it was the server kicking me out for taking up a connection that's not really used.

Does it happen when you do something in particular, such as jump to a new system or load a new grid etc?

This sounds to me that your game has de-synced (hence the no population of information) it tries to recover for a period of time then you in effect time out and drop connection.

If this happens while doing a re-occuring practice, it may well be a corruption in your client.

Either way my first suggested fix would be to uninstall the client purge temp files and settings etc and then re-install.

If this doesn't work I would submit a bug report to CCP, add in screenshots of you Pinging something at the same time you get the socket disconnect so they don't just conclude it's a outbound signal issue.

Speaking of which, I assume it isn't an outbound signal issue? You've stated that you have connection on another client, have you checked your firewall ports to make sure it isn't getting confused by having two clients open at the same time?

Does the problem occur when you are only running one client as well?

To answer your first question no as far as I can tell it seems to be completely random. Your second question yes it does occur when i have only one client open. Thank you for trying to help.

No problem, want to help fellow capsuleers to make sure their games working effectively it’s no fun for any involved if in the middle of a skermish your connection drops. Try the repair tool as Harlock suggested then if not I guess its a re-install as Darina suggests it could be due to settings or a coruption in the game file. One more thing, if you are currently using a wi-fi connection you could try going wired but I doubt this is the issue.

Ahhh one more thing, if this is a recent development (which I assume it is), may well be worth hanging on for the next Tyrannis deployment on Thursday… Noticed in the patch notes they have fixed some crash related issues, I know your not CTD'ing all the time but strainger things have been known to happen maybe it will fix it for you!

that latest patch didn’t help.

That latest patch didn’t help. Also I found a thread on the forums that is since 2008 on the subject “Socket Closed” and that thread didn’t seem to hold a direct solution.

I stopped running Skype and it helped with my connectivity - haven't tried again since moving to a difference ISP. It might be your ISP detecting 'P to P' activity and reseting your connection.

I do have Skype running in the background most of the time. So i will try this and see if it helps at all.

Oh I should mention I did have skype for quite a while before this problem occurred.

Didn’t work… this is getting really annoying I really want to play eve but I might have to cancel my subscription as the disconnections make it unplayable.

It could be other issues outside CCP control – some ISPs have problems at peak times servicing all their customers.
