Should I sell or refine?

How can I tell when I should just sell my ore or when I should refine it and sell the minerals?

Easiest way to decide is to take 1000 units of an ore type. Right-click and select refine, don't complete the refining, but make a note of how many minerals you get for 1000 ore. Then go to market and look at the market value from buy orders, calculate the total profit on that and then compare that to selling 1000 of the same ore directly.

Prices varies very much from day to day and from region to region.. Even 1 or 2 jumps out from your current location.

Another thing that decides if it's worth refining or not is based on your refining skills. The better they are, the more likely it will be more profitable for you to refine than sell direct

keep in mind that hauling crystals is much easier than hauling ore.

Your refining skills affect the amount of minerals you can get from the ore, but also your standings with the corp that owns the station also has a bearing. Higher standings mean less “tax”. You can achieve perfect 100% refine in most high-sec stations when you have high refine skills and a standing of about 6.00 with the station owner.

Standing required for that is actually 6.67+ including skills, unless something was changed. You may want to do some misions, or hire someone to do them for you.

if you want some help with that decision i can recommend eve refinery tool, it takes the market data from eve central and tells you if it`s worth to sell the item/ore or refine it and sell the minerals.

As a rule of thumb it is better to use sell orders when selling ore. Someone who has high refining skills will then buy it and refine it themselves. It not only keeps the manufacturing industry alive but gives you most times a better price then right clicking and selling.

I prefer refining all ores, because minerals takes less space in the cargohold - but Rook Ares is righ, sometimes it's better option to sell Ore unrefined.

You should get some tools which will calculate if it's profitable to refine ore or not - like this reprocessing calculator
