Storyline Mission Refusal - Penalty

Storyline-Faction Mission - Refusal Penalty-v-Rewards

I like to do the 'Storyline' missions that come along every 16 missions or so, but have recently come across a situation that I need a little clarification on.

Storyline Missions (SMs) seem to be good from the Corp/Faction Standing point of view and often have excellent rewards at higher levels.

However... ...I have recently started a new Alt and his first SM is one against the Gallante.

My 'Main' Alt. took every mission that came along, (he is pre-4hr rule) but has then had to train Dip 5 to offset the poor standing with Caldari & Amarr. I would rather not go the same route with this Alt if it can be avoided.

Do the SMs follow normal rules as to refusal and will another one be offered shortly if I refuse (ie. 4hrs later) or will I have to wait until the completion of another 16 missions?

Even if you do a storyline mission which doesn't involve killing an empire faction ships, you still lose faction standings since this is a storyline mission. So if you want to keep good standings with all empires, you should decline all storyline missions you get.

Killing the opposing faction ships will reduce your standings significantly, while completing the mission and turning it in does not have such a harsh penalty. To turn in the mission you probably need to kill the opposing faction's ships, so in total it is a very large decrease in standings for the opposing faction.

Turning down the storyline mission does not cause any decreased standings, but you will have to wait for another chance later. I tried to concentrate on missions versus pirate factions only, but some of my empire faction standings are still slowly approaching the "do not enter our space" zones, just because I gained faction standings with their enemies.
