Target Painters

Does using a target painter solo substantially increase the chances of hitting your target, or is its usefulness pretty much limited to a supporting role in gang fighting?

If it helps, I'm thinking of using one on a thorax, fitted with railguns, and usually kite and snipe opponents.

Target painting makes your target bigger.

Missile shockwaves therefore have a bigger surface area to interact with causing maximum damage, and Turrets have an easier time tracking the bigger target.

In your case, when sniping it will help tremendously on smaller targets, because your guns will be able to track them with greater ease.

Plus your fleet gets the benefit of target painters not just you... that goes down to drones and everything, improves other ships lock times etc...

Smashing thanks. I realised that it would help gang mates lock, wasn’t sure if that was pretty much all they were limited to.

Missiles will always hit unless a) they are not fast enough to catch their target or b) they run out of flight time before reaching it. Target painters increase the target's signature radius which increases the damage the target takes.

As for whether turrets hit, the signature radius of the target is largely secondary to it's transversal velocity (the speed it is traveling across your field of view).
