Various questions regarding standings

I just don't understand all this standings stuff (maybe I do, lets see). I've spent the last two weeks trying to grind up status with Duvoille Labs and am failing miserably (at this rate, it looks like I need to do 90 more lvl 2 missions before I reach the next Lvl 2 agent, let alone the lvl 3 agents).

Although I will be making a bunch of statements in this post, please see my questions which I will number.

I want to gain standing with a particular npc corporation - lets just say Duvoille Labs. Duvoille Labs, as far as I can tell, is a corporation which falls under the auspices of the Gallente Federation.

  1. I am presuming that npc corporations do in fact fall under the auspices of certain federations. Is this correct?

As far as I can tell, there are 4 types of standings which I need to be aware of:

  • My personal standing with Duvoille Labs.
  • My Corp's standing with Duvoille Labs.
  • My personal standing with the Gallente Federation.

  • My Corp's standing with the Gallente Federation.

    1. Are there any other types of standing which I should be aware of?

It appears that the best way to gain standing with a corporation is:

  • Firstly to train social and connections to lvl 4 or 5
  • To do combat missions for the relevant corporation (as opposed to other types of missions)

  • To get a corp mate or friend to run higher level missions for that corp, fleet you and share rewards

    1. Is there a better way to gain standing with a specific corporation?

I have heard through the help channel that my personal standing with the relevant Federation overrides my personal standing with the particular corp (in other words, if my standing with Gallente Federation is 4.0, then my effective standing with Duvoille Labs or any other Gallente Federation NPC corp is 4.0). However, it seems that this doesn't work in reverse - eg: If my standing with the Gallente Federation is 1.0 and my standing with Duvoille Labs is 7.0, then my standing with Duvoille labs is 7.0.

I have also heard that my corp's standing with the relevant federation and or with the relevant NPC corporation overrides my personal standing with the relevant federation and or with the relevant NPC corportaion (in other words, if corp's standing with Gallente Federation is 4.0, then my effective standing with Duvoille Labs or any other Gallente Federation NPC corp is 4.0 regardless of what my personal standing with that federation or NPC corp is). However, it seems that this doesn't work in reverse - eg: If my corp's standing with the Gallente Federation is 1.0 and my personal standing with the Gallente Federation is 7.0, then my standing with the Gallente Federation is 7.0.

I have also heard that in order to gain a massive bump in standing with the Gallente Federation, I should do the lvl 1 epic arc mission with the sisters of eve in Arnon.

  1. Are these things that I have heard correct?

TL;DR - How the heck do standings work? Please see my questions (which are numbered). Please can someone competent explain all of this?

OK lots there.

Yes, all npc corporations fall under the banner of a faction.

Yes, if your standing to the appropriate faction is higher than your standing to an npc corporation then it is the faction standing that counts (for most things, for example it doesn't count for tax on refining which will always be based on your standing to the corp.)

Your effective standing to any agent is basically the highest out of your standing to the faction, the corp or the actual agent you are dealing with.

No, your corp's standing will not override your personal standing except where it concerns raising POSes (which is always done on behalf of your corp anyway) and obtaining jump clones.

Combat missions do grant a higher return per mission but will generally take longer to run so it's a bit of give and take there.

You seem to have listed the best methods for obtaining standing but I would say that tagging along on a level 4 mission will work well for you. I recall that getting from level 2 agents to level 3 agents does take a while however also bear in mind the quality of an agent - if you can access a level 2 quality 20 agent then you can also access a level 3 quality -20 agent.

You should also be aware of the difference between actual standing and effective standing where your corp's standing to a corp or faction is concerned. The skills Diplomacy and Connections modify your standings to hostile and friendly corps and faction respectively. Your corp's standing to a corp or faction is the average of all the non-zero standings held by corp members without skills considered.

Epic arcs came out a long time after I started playing and I have never done one so cannot comment on that but I would be surprised if you didn't get a decent boost from it.

re: Negotiation, if I am reading your (Serker) comment correctly, I should have that skill trained up to at least 4? If Negotiation increases rewards and standing gains, then I will gain more standing per mission if I have negotiation trained up and thus get to higher lvl missions sooner?

Yes that’s correct – your rewards are based on the effective quality of the agent which Negotiation increases for you.

Negotiation increases effective quality of an agent(not a standing, as you wrought), thus increasing your rewards and standing gains. It is Connections skill which increases your standing towards friendly corporations/factions. And there is a Criminal Connections skill, which increases your standing towards pirate corps/factions.
