Vent or TS3. If money was no option, wich would be best?

Asked by [ Editor ]

I like VENT, some people like TS3. TS3 Servers are cheeper than vent servers.

If you had a million dollars and wanted to get a lifetime service for your corp/alliance, would you pick TS3 or Vent and why?

Eve-Voice is not an option, since when eve crashes, your comms are done. If you have to log your toon to log in the other toon your done too. so for this Q, no Eve-Voice.

I've used TS2, TS3 and Vent through the ages, I've used it for EVE, COD 2, 3, 4 for clan warfares, World in Conflict ESL and CoH and been an admin etc on both TS2 and Vent.

Here are my thoughts.. (ALL opinions of course)

I found TS2 the most difficult, Vent is easy to use and simpler.

Because of this though TS2 was much more powerful if not a bit unwieldy.

TS3 has improved the interface vastly over the old TS2.

TS3 has excellent audio quality and the option of Codec's is vast. However choose wisely as some of them will sap your net connection dry...

Vent voice quality was generally poorer even over TS2 but the delay tended to be less, possibly down to lower cpu cycle demands on the lower compression, or maybe due to low latency never really looked to in depth as to why.

TS3 provides the easy use features of Vent, but the power of TS2, it still has it's quirks, but generally it's much more streamline and doesn't have that annoying TS2 username glitch.

At the end of the day Team speak I feel is a lot more heavy duty than Ventrillo, Vent used to start to hiccup at around 150 members, later itterations have improved this dramatically it is still much more comfortable at the corp level rather than at alliance or even coalition size comms, but even in the old days, Teamspeak could handle 3 - 4 hundred without to much problem. Unsure if this feature is to do with servers we used or the program itself.

Ts3 - by far. It has excellent voice quality, and the amount of control over permissions, and features it has over vent are amazing. I love it. To top it - it's free for corp/alliance non-profit use.

Having used both, I’m absolutely a fan of TS3 over Vent — hands down.

Personally I would would go for mumble (i have) for one MAIN reason which is LATENCY it can not be emphasized enough how important low latency is for any kind of gaming that is not "casual" and by design mumble is no less then 1 second faster then all other things i have tried Skype, TS3/2 and ventrilo new or old, i would even go to say its almost as you are in the room with the ppl in the channel and singalongs are plausible!!!!! (The horror)

Mumble also has a very nice Codec and auto normalization of the speakers in the channel so no going in and setting a +54%/-79% for each and other player that joins which is the case of ventrilo for example.

the Noise reduction is also very good to have since its two birds in one stone less noise and more voice. Mumble is on top of all this constantly evolving trough the wonders of Open source.

concerning user-numbers as long as you or your server provider has bandwidth no problem should be had.

Mumble also has a inbuilt Overlay that can display who's talking and or who is in the channel which i find usfull when chatting with large groups of players which i have not gott to know yet.

It might not have all the features of Ventrilo or TS3 (yet), it has no fancy UI but what it dose it dose mighty good and you should definitely try it out and since its free its fairly simple to just download and set up on your own computer. Observe that some basic Reading skills are required to sett things up but as you play eve this should be a cake walk.

Sorry for the TL;DR hope this helps, thanks and Fly safe
