What are dog tags for?

And what are the differences between the pirate faction and player faction tags?

Tags are dropped by standard NPC pirates and can be turned in to certain Data Centers for loyalty points.

In addition to that there are special tags that are dropped by Pirate Commanders and bear the name of that pirate. They are worth extra.

On the other side of things, when a player gets killed in factional PvP he will drop a tag based on his rank with that faction. These tags are turned in at any station with a factional warfare agent and get you point for that faction. ( http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Item_Database:Trade_Goods:Insignias )

A lot of what you say is news to me, as in “wtf dude ?” news. I didn’t know you’d get loyalty points (LP) at data centers, I thought you’d get faction standings. I also didn’t know that players would drop tags, unless they had tags in their cargo hold previously of course. I hope you can update your answer to be more accurate.
