What are the different classes of capital ships and what are their roles?

Asked by [ Editor ]

Which ships are considered "supercapital" ships v. mere "capital" ships and why?

What are the various roles played by Titans, Dreadnoughts, Carriers, and Supercarriers?

What am I leaving out?

Capital Ships:

Carrier class: Thanatos, Archon, Nidhoggur, Chimera.

I think people tended to use these mainly for logistics (i.e. moving goods outside Empire) and repairing POS'! However that changed when CCP nerfed their carrying abilities. However they also changed the way triage works, so they became more viable in the role which CCP originally intended.

Dreadnought class: Moros, Revelation, Phoenix, Naglfar.

Prior to the introduction of Fighter Bombers, Dreads were the mainstay for capital blobs. Their intended role was taking down POS' but they were also damned good at dropping other capital ships. Rightly or wrongly i think people view now as obsolete due to the changes to Motherships and Fighter Bombers (they eat Dreadnoughts!).

Freighters class:

I won't go into much detail here as some people dispute these ships as being capitals. However in my opinion they're capitals as they require the capital ship skill! They're used for hauling large amounts of cargo. Jump Freighters come complete with their Jump Drives, which makes moving items outside of Empire a lot safer. The introduction of the Jump Freighter pretty much made the Carrier obsolete in terms of long haul cargo movement.

All Capital class ships can dock in a station.

Super Capital Ships:

Motherships (or Super Carriers): Nyx, Wyvern, Hel, Aeon.

Originally these ships were much maligned for their lack of direction. CCP addressed by removing things like the Clone Vat Bay, increasing their EHP and introducing Fighter Bombers. They were a bonafide “i-win” button; however CCP recently balanced Fighter Bombers by changing their output from missile to turret. This introduced tracking and stopped the Mom from rolling everything in its path (well a little bit).

Titan class ships: Erebus, Avatar, Leviathan, Ragnarok.

I believe the Titan was first introduced to counter the dreaded 0.0 blob. This vision was realised via the grid wide Doomsday a Titan could deploy. There fun and games to be had when Titans could fire these remotely… hehe! However it was considered overpowered, so the AoE Doomsday was struck wtfbbq damage by CCP(dev_dude), and reduced to a single shot.

This was introduced with the unintended issue of being used in low sec, whereas the AoE could only be used in 0.0. Cue howls of protest and eventually patched this. There was also a huge outcry from Mom pilots as this weapon change was implemented without the complimentary increase to a Mom’s EHP. This resulted in Mom’s being one shotted by a Titan and the obligatory howls of protest.

The Mom got its EHP boost and can now survive one or two hits from a Doomsday device. Dreadnoughts and Carriers tend to be easy prey… The weapon cannot be used on structures.

Super Capital class ships cannot dock at a station.

So, what differentiates a Capital class ship from a Super Capital class ship? Well I guess the ability to dock, skill requirements, ease of production and cost. Each has its own effectiveness in its own role, so I do not see that as a defining factor in terms of Capital class versus Super Capital class.

You forgot the Industrial Capitals Orca and Rorqual.

I wouldn’t accept this as an answer as other people may be able to offer something better. I have never flown a Titan, so I cannot speak on that area with any real authority.

Hmmm Rorq, yes okay, absolutely! The Orca? No. It doesn’t require the capital Ships skill to be trained. It’s an Industrial Command Ship, whereas the Rorq is a Capital Industrial Ship.

I tend to agree that an Orca isn’t a capital. Even though it needs capital components to build it, it doesn’t, as Rash points out, require the skill Capital Ships to fly it. I recall CCP referring to it as a sub-capital ship at one point.

Neither Freighters nor Jump Freighters require Capital Ship skill to fly (just Advanced Spaceship Command), however they are built out of capital ship components.

Doh… in my defense I did say that some people dispute them as being capital class ships though :P

Capital ships include, freighters, jump freighters, capital industrial ships, carriers, dreadnoughts, supercarriers, and titans. All capital ships have jump drives except the ones I specifically state otherwise.

Freighters are just big cargoholds. Depending on skills, their cargoholds are between 700,000 and 1,000,000 m3. They do not have jump drives. Ships of this class are the Obelisk, Providence, Charon, and Fenrir.

Jump freighters are like normal freighters only they have jump drives but they also have smaller cargoholds. Ships of this class are the Ark, Rhea, Anshar, and Nomad.

Capital Industrial ships are used to facilitate mining operations and transport ore. There are two ships of this class, the Orca and Rorqual. The Orca does not have a jump drive. The Rorqual has the ability to compress ore, allowing more to be transported at once. They also have ship maintenence bays allowing nearby ships to refit in space or be docked inside.

Carriers deploy a massive amount of drones. Depending on the pilot's skills and ship fitting, a carrier can deploy up to 15 drones up to fighter size. Fighters are cruiser sized drones. Ships of this class are the Archon, Chimera, Thanatos, and Nidhoggur.

Dreadnoughts are primarily used for POS and outpost attacking. They can also be used effectively against other capital ships. They typically don't engage in subcapital fights due to slow turret tracking; a dreadnought will have trouble shooting even a battleship. Ships of this class are the Revelation, Phoenix, Moros, and Naglfar.

Supercarriers are basically bigger carriers. They have a far bigger and better tank and can deploy up to 25 drones. They also can deploy fighter-bombers, the highest damage dealing drone in EVE, but these drones are only effective against capitals. Supercarriers can also can use Remote ECM Burst which functions like a normal ECM Burst except it is centered on a targeted ship up to 150km away. Ships of this class are the Aeon, Wyvern, Nyx, and Hel.

Titans have two unique abilities, the bridge and doomsday. When a Titan bridges, it is locking onto a cyno lit in a nearby system but instead of jumping itself there it becomes a sort of stargate that ships in its fleet can use to jump themselves to the cyno, even if they do not have jump drives themselves. A doomsday is a single-target weapon which deals roughly 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 damage, enough to instantly destroy any ship except supercapitals. Ships of this class are the Avatar, Leviathan, Erebus, and Ragnarok.

Capital industrials, carriers, supercarriers, and titans have ship maintenance bays which allow nearby friendly ships to refit in space and be docked inside.

Titans, supercarriers, and Rorquals can also use Clone Vat Bays which allow others to install jump clones.

Only the supercarriers and titans are considered supercapitals. Supercapitals are too large to dock in stations/outposts.

The Rorqual is only a capital and can dock at a station.

Supercarriers can’t fit Clone Vat Bays any more.

Both answers were great and your answer included great information that the other didn’t have. I wish I could choose you both, because that’s the real answer here. I think you deserved a lot more upvotes, but you got mine, as the OP. +1.
