What do I need to start exploring wormholes?

What are the minimum skills one needs to start exploring wormholes? What ship classes are needed?

Ship: Frigate with scan bonuses (Heron, Imicus, Magnate or Probe) --> Covops Frigate (Anathema, Buzzard, Cheetah or Helios) --> Recon cruiser

Mods: Core probe launcher (or Sister's alternative) Ammo: Core scan probes (3 to 5)

Skills:

  • Astrometrics (to use probe launcher)
  • Jury Rigging (to use scanning enhancement rigs)
  • Astrometric Acquisition (less scan time)
  • Astrometric Pinpointing (more accurate scanning)
  • Astrometric Rangefinding (more scan probe strength)
  • Hacking (if you want to crack radar-site cans)
  • Archaeology (if you want to crack magnetometric-site cans)
  • Salvaging (if you want to salvage sleeper wrecks and get in some cans)
  • Cloaking (if you want to use a cloak to prevent being blown up)

If you can get hold of a Zephyr (Ship) you cannot cloak (or shoot or do anything else), but Sleepers wont target or shoot at you.

Check out this article for details.

Edit: Oh and here's HOW to scan them out. Also go search on youtube - there are a number of how to scan videos.

Skills to use a probe launcher and 4 scan probes.

Recommended but not required would be a T1 frig dedicated to scanning (heron for example if caldari) and a cloak. 5 probes is recommended (imo).

edit - ideally you want a cov ops such as a buzzard rigged w/ scanning rigs and sisters probes (will speed things up a great deal)

Don't underestimate the difficulty of wormholes... But don't overestimate them either.

Unless you intend to simply fly around in wormholes, I would suggest getting yourself into a T2 fit battlecruiser. I hear that the drake is the bc king of soloing wormholes, although I have never flown one. I used a shield tanked. Cane in a C1 last night and it did fine.

Wormhole space and wormhole pve is, in my opinion, very "team" orientated. With decent skills for a specialist purpose (Scanning, salvage, dps) you can participate and do well in a wormhole gang.

To give you an idea, I was regularly participating in C1 and C2 wormhole fleets when I had about 4-5 mil sp. I did minimal dps but I was there and did on occassion save the fleet by keeping a keen eye on D-scan.

Oh, and don't forget the incredible importance of being reasonably good at scanning. Sooner Or later you will get stuck in w-space. You will want decent enough skills to get yourself out

Good luck!
