What do you wish you had known when you first started out?

Asked by [ Editor ]

I'm not sure if this site is an appropriate place for this kind of "question", but figured it might help to give some newer players some tips (I'm also looking for your tips).

I wish I had known that:

  1. You need not use autopilot to move around. Simply right click on an object in space (or the overview) and click warp to 0.

  2. You can stack your turrets / launchers by dragging and dropping them on top of each other whilst holding shift (either on HUD or fitting window (note: must be of the same type and have no ammo loaded)). This means you dont have to click F1 - F6 to fire off all your guns! One click ftw!

  3. You can open two windows of the same type by holding down shift when you click. Want to look at two toons at once to see if one is an alt? Want to compare the stats of a microwarpdrive and an afterburner? Simply click show info whilst holding down shift. Two windos! Wallah!

  4. You can compare sets of the same type of module by using the compare tool. Show info --> Variations --> Compare.

  5. You can set up variations of your overview and save them! What? Really? Yes. No more veldspar!

  6. Low security space really isn't that dangerous (usually). Nulsec is even safer (mainly). Despite its status, high security space does allow you to be killed... in your new retriever... by a corpmate.

  7. Ombey's maps kick the butt of all things eve.

  8. You are never safe. Not even if you are afk.

I wish I had known that clearing out your bookmarks, contacts and evemail made a substantial difference to the amount of lag you suffer from.

Those are all great points, particularly points 2, 3 and 5.

Incidentally point 2 grouping your turrets isn't always the best course of action, you are going Alpha over DPS, if you are using high damage low rate of fire weapons such as Torps or Arty, you are better off making smaller groups as if you miss with a group of 8 arty you will have to wait a long time to inflict damage again giving time for natural recharge to take place... Hence I tend to group my 8 arty guns into pairs and let rip at 2 second intervals for best mix of maximum damage potential/dps

Also Number 8 has a caveat, you are safe in a station.... until you decide to undock of course.

Others that are great to know:

Right clicking on the warp to, orbit, keep at range buttons allows you to set default distances.

Being War Dec'd means 0.0 safer than hi-sec.

You can still activate all your modules and shoot stuff while a cyno is lit, you just can't move!!!!

Never underestimate your alliance mates perpencity for stupidity.

Bailing out said mate usually results in you dying also

beware baiting battleships can fit cyno's too.

Nothing can match the raw destructive power of 50 stealth bombers bombing an area at the same time. Certainly not my graphics card.

Local is life.

evemaps.dotlan.net/radar IGB FTW <----- how many times this has saved my behind

God gave you a cloaking device..... what are you waiting for.

If things seem like they are going well, you're almost certainly in a trap.

A good Covert Ops fleet can wipe out a force 5 times it's size easy.

never warp to gate/station at 0 in 0.0, always warp to 0 though in lowsec/hisec.

You will die a horrible firey death the second you relax/underestimate 0.0

Unless I’m entirely mistaken the hit chance is calculated per gun still even if grouped. So if 1 misses the rest will still hit, total damage will just show up lower and only if all guns miss will it say You’re group of ……….. have missed.

Good tip about not stacking slow guns!

is local life? what system do you live in? lol :P

Not a wormhole :P … And yes, forgetting to check Local leads to very bad days usually lol.

i guess it’s cause… if you notice you miss the first shot(s)… you can change your speed/orbit/whatever before shooting again… EVE is more of a thinking game than it’s a action game… know your math…

Sorry chaps let me clarify, yes each gun is calculated individually, however primary reason for spacing your shots is purely down to RoF. By spacing your guns you are doing damage more frequently even if less of it, this is especially important against passive regen tanks. The comment about missing may be slightly misleading re-reading it. It mitigates the effect of missing a single salvo because it will be less time before the next one arrives. Where as if you fire together you have to wait alot longer to strike again. Basic point is on some targets alpha isn’t always the answer!

I wish I knew I couldn't jump through jumpgates if I shot at someone, e.g. returned aggression against pirates (MMOASBOs). Good to know is that you can wait for them to shoot at you and then jump and then they will have to wait x number of seconds to jump through.

I wish I had known about session timer changes.

yep session timers were a big thing to get my head around, first time I got ganked I was at a Station in low sec, if I hadn’t had read about session timers, I would have lost my pod as well as my first Battlecruiser

I wish I knew about learning skills before i used up the majority of my 100% starting skill training boost.

I wish I knew about evemon from http://evemon.battleclinic.com/ sometime near the start so that i can plan my skills (this also helps with the learning skills as it allows you to plan them right as sometimes as learning skill might just end up increasing your total training time).

Absolutely, I thought it was for in game stuff only, but yeah better than all of that is the meta game applications EVEMon, EFT and EVEHQ… These Three tools have probably saved me months of aimless wandering training. LOL

yeah… wish i had known about Learning skills when i started too… but i am sure the new players will have it better now that they finally removed them ^^

i wish i knew there is more to each race, than the lore you are given at character creation.
new players should find out how each race's ships work before picking a race. the nature of ships from each race can vary a lot, and mostly aren't affected by the lore. minmatar for example, were slaves, and has rusty ships, but they can still fly as well as others, if not better, in some cases. and even though caldari are said to have the most "advanced" ships, they are still generally on pair with the rest, but have their own way of flying, like each race has.

This is less important now than in the old days, due to all races characters having the same starting skills, but yes the nature of the vessels I think should be explained a bit clearer on Character creation. Along with if you like pretty lights join Amarr, Speed join Matari etc

i’m not talking about what bloodline to start, but what race to start and put your skills in. as you said, the nature of the vessels is what i’m thinking about, and it isn’t explained to new players.i’ll edit my answer to make it clearer ^^

I wish I had known how to find agents without simply going to random stations and checking for agents I could use. If I had known how to find agents when I started I would have much better standings.

I wish I had known how much of a time sink Eve is! Three years in, and the real world no longer exists. Well, not quite, but almost! :)

Train your learning skills ASAP

Take low/nullsec systems off the market view if you aren't comfortable going there (same with Autopilot)

Don't AFK to Jita

Get a good corp

And what they said

  1. Eglennaert is high-sec... Egghelende is low-sec... and those red dudes shooting my pod are not npcs AAAARRGGEE sniff lol... er to translate further I guess it would be check for red-dots when using Autopilot.

  2. CONCORD is there to punish not to protect. You are not safe anywhere in Eve other than docked at a station, and that is how it is supposed to be.

  3. HTFU and get stuck into pvp, it is sooo much fun, I wish I had got started with it a lot sooner rather than spending 2 years sucking missions in high-sec, thinking i wasn't the right "type" of player for pvp.

Eglennaert is high-sec… Egghelende is low-sec… true dat and painfully learned

Oh and hell yes get stuck into pvp. I have an ancient carebear noob with 42M sps and a miserable battle record. My 2 month old alt has more kills and WAY more fun under (her) belt because I finally decided to just start attacking people and quit having heart palpitations whenever I see that big red banner. Now I crave that.. oh delicious reds :)

  1. For all combat pilots: Max out your Perception, then your Willpower, then your Intelligence, and finally Memory. In that order. You'll be putting more into spaceship command and gunnery than anywhere else in the years to come.

  2. Lowsec may have better rats, but it's very dangerous.
