I want to add that cheap t1 drones help as well, especially if you want to solo sentry tank in anything below a BS class ship. Just drop your drones, do something naughty and your drones get walloped in turn and give you precious seconds to either replenish them or kill the target.

With drones and a plate, I can usually sit in a plated ruppy, solo tanking sentry guns while tackling, scrambling and killing/ransoming someone. It's quite a thrill to be honest.

Don't sit on the gate, all red and blinky for too long however - even if you can tank the guns easily. You're a target and sooner or later, someone will drop a rather large hammer on you....

Sentry guns switch targets periodically, 3-4 battlecruisers with either active or passive shield tank should be able to tank the guns since the sentry will share between them. A few armor tanked battleships can usually sustain it through spider tanking (remote repairing each other).

The sentry gun do 176 damage split as described by Rook. Gates have 2, stations have 4.

Most pirates don't tank the sentry guns permanently, rather they warp off to a safe spot to repair at leisure while they wait for the 15 minutes GCC timer to expire. They equip a "buffer" tank to last long enough under gate guns to kill their likely victims.

To solo tank gate guns requires a very solid tank. Most PvP fits don't have the capacitor recharge to sustain such a tank and must rely on cap booster charges to support their repairs. Often they'll have a giant secure container anchored with cap charges to refill their cargo.

Most BSes can run 1000+ DPS tank uing Cap Boosters

At which point they do almost no DPS and they depend on chewing through 2 cap charges every 12 seconds. While they might carry 24 of them at best. Also, 1000+ dps omni (that EM/EXP hole really hits hard) is much harder to get and sustain then 1000+ specific.

The short answer of it is, if there are more than two of you in BC's with moderate skills, you should be able to tank the guns more than long enough to get in, kill, and get out. I would highly recommend creating an aligned warp-out safe spot (ie, directly inline with your warp in from your initial safe spot) as well, it will save you both if the heat gets too hot to handle at the gate, or if you are probed out and need to move fast (somewhere other than directly to the gate).

It’s possible to get quick kills in pretty much anything at a gate, things like T1 haulers, covert ops and some T1 frigs can be killed in 1 or 2 volleys from a gank frig before you pop. The trick is to be aligned and at you optimal before you start shooting. Risky but very funny.
