What is spider tanking and how do you do it?

Asked by [ Editor ]

I've been looking into getting into wormholes, and I keep seeing people talk about spider tanking. What is spider tanking and how is it done? What skills and modules do I need to spider tank?

Spider tanking is when two or more ships repair each other using remote armor/shield repairers. This is more effective that each repairing his/her own ship due to how the remote reps are more efficient. Look up the items in game for an idea of how much more effective.

The keys to spider tanking is 2 or more ships fits correctly, and being able to maintain range for repairs. Also, though it goes without saying, the ships are much more vulnerable solo.

Skills - you need the remote armor/shield repair skill and the energy transfer skill to 4 (since you can also feed each other capacitor charge in a very very efficient manner).

With regards to wormholes, spider tanked drakes and tengus are quite common.

EFT can help you figure out your tank - look at the "Projected effects" tab at the bottom.

LiverPooler provides a good answer here.

My old corp tried a spider tank setup in W-Space with 5 virtually identical Myrmidon fits (the same basic fit with some variations so we had options)

The problem we had is that you need to stay so damn close to each other. A medium remote armour repairer only reaches 5kms and it's really hard to move around anywhere without going out of range.

This is especially true when you all have afterburners fit. Different skill levels meant we all traveled at different speeds. It was rather stressful trying to keep us all together and we gave up after a while. Maybe with more practice or equalisation of our skill levels we could have made it easier.

Maybe the slowest one could be “leader” and others just set “keep in range” to him.

Yeah we tried that and it was the best system we came up with – it worked mostly but was just a bit unreliable – we accelerated at different rates too which we couldn’t do much about!

And you never considered telling everyone ‘set speed to x m/s’? It’s not because you can go full throttle that you should ;–)

Yes we tried lots of things including the rather obvious – you go and try keeping 5 ships within 5kms of each other without staying still.

I’ve never spider tanked, but the way my old wormhole corp used to do is was to use one of the ships as an anchor – everyone orbits the anchor at a set distance (within rep range) and the anchor moves the fleet around by flying towards sleepers etc. Worked quite well.

We did get it to work fairly but it only took a random bounce off another ship with a ton of Sleepers pounding at us to bring panic stations into action and the scramble to get back into range and restart reppers again. We tended to spend more time watching your range to the other ships than what we were supposed to be doing.

Did I state something incorrect? No! Was I offensive? No! Random downvote is pointless? Yes!
