What is the best alternate to a BS for L4 missions?

What creative ways have pilots found to run L4 missions besides a straight BS or group of BS's and salvager's? I would like to run L4's but don't like the idea of staring at the same BS every day for x months. Any ideas?

Battlecruisers provide an interesting challenge. I flew a Myrmidon and solo tanked every level 4 I've faced. It can be difficult as you MUST keep moving with an AB on but it was great fun.

Nowadays I'm a boring person who jumps in a Domi, warps to the field, deploys drones and takes a nap.

Passive shield tanked Drakes can handle them nicely as can a passive shield tanked Hurricane, as a friend of mine proved.

Field Command ships also do well, in particular the Sleipnir.

And you will end staring at whatever ship you choose for the next couple of months. So if there is no difference, why bother? But if you still interested, you may stick to Tengu. Either good tank with a really nice speed(especially compared to slowboating BS... When i fly over 50 km to the gate in some mission, i'm getting really angry!) and an ok dps, especially against little vessels. The same goes for T1 battlecruisers and their T2 relatives, except for speed. But battleships still end up shooting battleships quicker.

There are many ways: (Caldari)

  1. passive shield tanked Drake
  2. passive shield tanked Nighthawk (Field Command Ship)
  3. Tengu (Strategic Cruiser)
  4. Marauder (maybe, never tested one though)

I prefer the Nighthawk. Golem isn't worth it, in my opinion, Tengu can be too expansive. Drake is fairly cheap and most, if not all of the L4's can be managed with one, but the Nighthawk is better.

Heh, I tried Golem, didn’t like it, sold it and went back to Nighthawk. Some time later, an IRL friend decided to get a Golem, and I told him it wasn’t worth it and he’d just end up going back to Nighthawk like me, but he tried it anyway…sure enough, he went back to Nighthawk as well, but unlike me, he didn’t sell the Golem. He kept it as his looting boat. Brilliant. :) In fairness, though, we both have CS 5, which really tips the scales on Nighthawk from ‘good’ to ‘awesome’.

Golem is just brilliant, if you ask me. You just need to have necessary array of skills(t2 torpedoes, missile range skills and a LOT of support stuff), proper fitting(T2 modules is enough, t2 rigs really help) and – the most important thing – you must be ready to multitask. Shooting, shield booster pulsing and salvaging at one time is so difficult compared to passive tanked ships, but it is challenging and therefore interesting! You must play the game if you play the game, I think.

IMHO, Field Command Ships are the best alternative. Fast enough to move around not get killed, powerful enough to not make it too tedious. Well-tanked HACs can do it too, if they keep moving.

If you fly Gallente and fancy a challenge fly a shield tanked celestis, a couple of us used to do it for shits and giggles and it is surprisingly sturdy if a little slow at clearing them. Although I wouldn't try it in one of the more dps heavy l4's unless I had a spare hull going to waste in the hanger; but it does make for an interesting change when bored, but not really something to use when time is an issue.

Other than that I have had surprising success in a proteus rail/drone fit of late, but a BS wil always be the quickest way to clear them.
