Since this question pops up every now and then, it warrants consideration and a serious answer. :)

But if you NEED smack: Gallenti ? i at the end ? wtf ?

True and I seem to be lacking the lol or troll tags…

Because it’s not a lol or troll question… It’s a valid question for a new player. Fixed spelling errors…

The answer really comes down to: What do you want to do? Various ships of various races are by better suited to particular roles. Caldari electronic warfare ships, Amarr damage-dealers, Minmatar.... I'm sure there's something they're useful at, and Gallente for drones. To pick on a few areas.

And if you want to consider the storyline/RP implications then, well, that's a personal judgement call too.

There's also the issue of training diversification; going for Amarr is more flexible than Caldari if you go for Caldari missile boats since you'll get all the targeting/turret skills that you could need in Gallente and Minnie boats as well as Caldari turret boats. Same argument can be made in various directions of course.

Because the starting skills got changed a little while back and you now start with less skills than you used to, starting race is not much of an issue any more.

You can train the ships you want to fly no matter what race they are. The only thing race does these days is decide how your character looks, and where you start off. As others have mentioned no race ships is "better" than the others, all races have good ships.

Amarr are generally good armor tankers and their ships usually use lasers. Their battleships are the number one choice for large scale fleet warfare and the Curse Recon ship is one of the most feared ships for any small ship relying on speed or any active tanker relying on cap.

Caldari are generally shield tanked and rely mostly on missiles, but a few of the ships are also rail based. The ECM ships are all Caldari and are a great addition to any gang.

Gallente are generally armor tanked and deal damage by close range blasters and drones. The Taranis is the best combat interceptor in game, and the Ares is arguably the best fleet interceptor.

Minmatar are generally shield tanked (though a lot of ships can go both ways) and deal damage through projectile weapons. Their ships are the fastest in game in most classes.

I personally fly Minmatar, but any race has good ships for both PvE and PvP.

Minmatar are generally accepted as being the most skill intensive to train but they have a selection of boats that any regular pvp'r knows to be wary of. Also Arty boats have a higher alpha than most anything else :)

Not only that, but Minmatar ships – once you have the right skilsl trained – are some of the most flexable and versatile ships in the game fitting wise. And having no cap penalty on weapons is a big bonus!

Minmatar, of course! Who can't love a tribal based society of of freedom fighting ex-slaves flying the ugliest ships in EVE?

And we have the most active race channel.

Minmatar.... I'm sure there's something they're useful at

Ix always makes me laugh, but bottom line his advice on racial selection is valid.

For the record, Minmatar are good at speed and projectile weapons = big damage

In the long run, because you can cross-train skills to fly any race, does it even matter at all?

Only marginally, it comes down to story missions mostly. Aside from that and serious roleplaying there’s no difference.

For a new player, it's always good to start as a Caldari. I know i would if i had a chance to. I currently regret the decision to start as a Gallente.

Why Caldari.? First days are mining, missioning and carebear stuff mostly. Mining bantam and osprey are the best. Missioning, the Kestrel, Caracal, Drake and Raven lineup are uncontested as ideal missioners, having strong tanks, biggest damage output and less time to train the skills.

So, if you're new, start Caldari. You'll want to cross train later anyway, and you'll want to do Minmatar, as they overlap in skills.

HOWEVER, since you'd like trolling and stuff. Amarr ftw.!

If you want to go into PVP though and do something besides e-war/drake gangs Amarr and Minmatar would be a better choise which both have excelent missions ships as well.
