What should I know about industry involving blueprints

I am trying to set myself up with some isk by selling copies of blueprints.

As far as I can tell, the process is:

  1. Buy a BPO off the market
  2. Travel to ultra quiet low security space station which has a science and industry slot
  3. Do tons of research on the BPO, to increase its material and time efficiency.
  4. Make copies of the BPO and sell them via contract.

Some general questions:

Is the above breakdown correct? Or am I missing something?

Is BPO research and copying actually worth it? It seems to me that it would take a long time to do and might not yeild that much isk?

If it is worth it, what blueprints should I be focusing on? ammo? ships (which ones?) materials?

The other thing to do is to sell researched BPO bundles. And you can make a "bundle" that way.

I for one will not buy copies when I can buy a researched original for a bit more. :D

Like Small Hybrid, Small Projectile and Standard Missile sets should be quick to research.

If this is in your interest, look around for research alliances, that will allow you to rent their pos for ME and PE research. Since you are not copying this is not a bad idea.

As inventor I'd buy 1-run ship BPCs. Or max-run module BPCs. Material level doesn't matter to me, so unresearched ones are preferred (these should be cheaper).

Speaking of capital ship production, even single BPCs should be ok.

Your plan looks fine. However, the BPC selling is not really worth it. I tried with a megathron BPO some time back, but the BPCs sold very slowly despite them being reasonably cheap! I eventually managed to sell enough BPCs and sell the BPO to recoup the losses, but it wasn't a fun experiment.

I haven't tried it myself, but providing "packages" of BPCs for capital ship construction might be lucrative. An orca, dreadnaught or carrier package would be my choice, but there is still the risk of them not selling as well as I guess they should and the number of expensive BPOs is quite high for capital ships (which is why it might be more lucrative in profit% than a battleship BPO.)

The problem with reselling BPCs (even researched ones) is that there's a fairly low barrier to entry. Anyone can come in on their first day (ISK permitting of course), buy a BPO, and start researching. In just a few weeks they can have an essentially perfect original -- and thus, why would they want your copy?

Most people will either be serious enough about manufacturing that they already have researched BPOs, or not serious enough to worry about finding a "perfect" researched copy. Copies are nice for sharing around your corp or something... but as a business model, you'll probably do better just building your own items from the researched BPs and selling those.

ETA: The "bundle" solution is also not a bad one -- a researched missile pack, for example (5000 runs of each type of Heavy or each type of Cruise missile) might get a few buyers for the right price. I've actually purchased a few of these myself.
