What use are shield flux coils?

Looking at the stats, they make no sense.

Shield Flux Coil II gives +30% shield regen but -15% maximum shield size.

The total regen bonus is 1.3 * 0.85 = 1.105 = 10.5% better.

A PDU II gives +8.5% shield recharge and +5% shield extension.

The total shield regen bonus is 1.085 * 1.05 = 1.13925 = 13.9% better

So, considering that a PDU provides more shield EHP, better shield regen, adds cap regen, adds grid, and uses even less CPU than a SFC II, why would anyone use a flux coil?

I hardly ever see them it has to be said, and I wouldn't fit one for the reasons you said...

However if you have sufficient grid, and your tight on ISK, then its a cheap way to get a shield boost.

AFAIK there is no penalty for going flux coils over a PDU, no Idea why CCP has made so many items completely useless. :S

Your calculation is not correct.

The equation for max shield recharge is rather complex and I don't have it in front of me, but what I do know is that the numbers presented in the OP are an over simplification.

While total shield HP has an impact on shield regeneration, the regeneration rate itself is even more important. For most passive shield tank fits, you will get a better peak shield recharge with a few Shield flux coil IIs than you will with PDUs. You will get more EHP with PDUs, though, but this is not always important.

It all depends on what you want to do with the ship. However the OP stated that PDUs provide more regen than SFCs and this is simply not the case.
