Which New Race to Train?

Asked by , Edited by Silas Sanyasi [ Moderator ]

I currently fly Caldari in 0.0, However I usually end up flying an ECM boat or a drake. I am looking to fly a new race for PVP. The main ship types I am looking for are Recons and HACs though I would fly others. I am torn between Mini and Amarr. These ships would mainly be for medium to small gangs and gate camps. Any suggestions or pros and cons?

Lots of good information above, heres a little more supplimentary info, based on my experience.

You have picked the right races.

The Amarr HAC (Zealot) is quite possibly the toughest and most renound HAC in the game, incredibly difficult to crack, great at sniping. However, the Ishtar is also an awesome PVP boat in the right hands (although I think it's better for its expense as a PVE Boat), the Muninn definatley has the edge as a close range brawler, and the vagabond.... well I'm sure your aware of it's reputation. So answer is, depends on your playstyle if you like to get up close and personal go Matari, if you like to shoot at your pray from 100 KM and laugh that they can't hurt you...go Amarr.

In terms of recon again, the Rapier is well liked! I think this ship is great as a forward scout and tatical insertion ship. So many slots for lots of goodness, you can easily bounce a pray and point and web him at 20KM, and before the cycle expires, trigger a covert cyno and call in the SB/SC calvary... nice to see an enemy CNR go down due to your handy work. I have also fitted a standard cyno to a Rapier (Probably one of the few) it's an expensive bullseye to be honest but it completely shocks the enemy in fleet engagements when they are faced with a cyno with 50,000 EHP and 400 DPS passive shield tank and flight of Hornet drones which try to jam them, rather than a instapop frigate, may just give you the edge in a capital engagement... Just be prepared to loose 150 Million to do it.

However, my friend flies Curses and Pilgrims and swears by them! I certainly see the appeal of the curse, being a neut ship they are the vagabond or inty/dramiel worst nightmare, also great against Ammar Battleships and generally any ship that relies heavily on their cap to survive, ironically most Matari ships are therefore pretty immune, but any speed tank goes out the window that's for sure.

Here I would go with what you feel is most useful, are you there to support black ops roams, and be a long range scout? if so I have no qualms in saying the Rapier always works for me. If however you want recons to support the fleet and take a more aggressive role, the Curse is in the right hands a nightmare to contend with.

The Amarr and Minmatar ships are great, as the other answers have shown, but have you considered the Gallente ships properly?

Gallente use hybrid guns, drones, damps and (some) missiles, and Caldari use missiles, ECM, hybrid guns and (some) drones. Your Caldari skillset mixes very well with Gallente ships.

The Arazu (Gallente Force Recon) has similar features to the Rapier, except that you have extra range to a point (up to 70km with the right implants, fittings and skills) and have extra power with sensor damps. The Lachesis (Gallente Combat Recon) is similar, but uses missiles and does not have the covert abilities.

The Ishtar (Gallente HAC) is very expensive, but has powerful drone abilities and can be fitted with a good tank. (The Vexor is not too bad as a cheap alternative to the Ishtar, if you don't get shot.) The Deimos is an incredibly damaging close range brawler.

The Taranis is often cited as the best combat interceptor, but everyone has their own opinion.

Mixing Caldari with Gallente you also get a selection of pirate ships to use, such as the Worm, Gila and Rattlesnake. With Caldari/Amarr you could use a Succubus, Phantasm and Nightmare, but with Caldari/Minmatar there are no pirate ships available.

Yes Gallente ships are closest to the Caldari in terms of training times. This is a Great post and something I didn’t consider which I should have. The Arazu’s I have come accross in combat however I have to say don’t seem to have the survivability of the Rapier’s I’m not sure why this is, maybe because of the point bonus they are primaried earlier, but with the pointing range I am frankly shocked that they don’t manage to survive, looking at reasons why it only has 50% EM & Thermal resists in the armour which is pretty poor for a T2 ship, and means that Amarr weapons attract maximum damage.

An Arazu fitted for range in point, ewar and guns should more than make up for the sub-par tank. This doesn’t work so well if you can’t damp all the long range ships sufficiently, though.

Im a beginner in eve myself but heres my opinion from whats Ive gathered so far:

Amarr and minmatar both have good dps, and tank-ability. minmatar doesnt require cap usage for firing with projectile turrets so thats a plus. Minmatar has an advantage from speed. Amarr can change weapon ammo very fast, no waiting 10 seconds... like the rest.

Cons for amarr that come to mind would be cap usage for guns. from the ship classes IVe flown, in both minmatar and amarr, I want to say amarr have a little edge on cap attributes as well. ie bigger cap and or better recharge rate naturally.

I prefer minmatar frigs and assault figs as Im starting out, and I like the line up of hac, recons, bc, str cruiser, and bs form both amarr and minmatar myself as well. just get a rebel bloodline female minmatar chracter, name her christine, and gank gank gank... :: dont forget to cross train. its fun. Ive heard from several seasoned players that minmatar is the best race to work in, as its well suited all areas of races, it will just take a little longer training to get that.

its hard to say what race is best its all about what fits you if you like hardhitters go amarr if you like drones go gallante if you like fast ships go minmatar and if you like heavy tank go caldari. The best for recon is amarr pilgrim for sneaky 1v1, they also have decent hacs minmatar hacs are good vegabond is good for hit and run

The way I look at it is a question of what you have that cross trains efficiently. I believe that Caldari <-> Amarr is one of the hardest cross trainings out there. You go from a no cap, no turret shield tanker to a high cap, all turret armor tanker. Very few ship skills translate across that gap.

Caldari to Minmatar lets you still use missiles heavily and can often be fit as shield tankers. This is probably the easiest cross train for a caldari.

Caldari to Gallante lets you continue to improve the hybrids that you may have trained for some caldari ships. The Caldari Gallante cross training also gives you some pirate faction ships that can be fun to fly.

There is nothing saying you can't cross train for anything you want... but its more a question of how fast you want to get into those ships and how continuing training for your main gank and tank will benefit the cross training.

Caldari mixes very well with Minmatar, if you're willing to let go the eye candy that Amarr ships tend to give you. Also, if you plan on being a recon pilot, there's not much use for Matari ships except for double webbing that freighter on his way to Jita (though some people might object to this).

If i had fully trained Caldari like you have, i'd go Matari for the Jaguar/Vagabond/Sleipnir line up (if i was a combat pilot, sweet old autocannons always are pleasing to the ear) or the Stiletto/Sabre/Broadswoard roll (if i was planning to be support tackle/bubble).
