this depends on the ship you are flying, e.g. most gallente ships prefer armor tanking and have bonuses for it while most caldari ships prefer shield tanking. this can be seen that they either have more shield or armor and also in the slot layout. shield tanking ships have normally more mid-slots while armor tanking ships have more low-slots to fit the modules needed for tanking.

Passive Tanking: Sheild. Armor can not do it. 100% energy Efficent. Passive Drake, Cane, Myrm, Raven, Rohk, Chimera, MOMS... the list goes on.

Active: This is where it gets tricky.

Sheild:

  • More Cap Use
  • HP gained at the beginning of the cycle.
  • Active shield is all Mid slots, save DCU.
  • Hurt by Cap Power Relays, +20% cap, -20% Sheild Boost.
  • Very weak to EM 0% base t1 resistance (Not Minmatar t2 tho...)
  • Lows left open for DMG/Speed mods.

Armor

  • Less Cap use
  • HP Gained at the end of cycle
  • Not hurt by any cap recharge mod
  • Exclusive to Low slots
  • Mids open for EWAR, Cap Recharge, Cap Injector
  • Weak to Ex, 15% t1 base resistance.
  • Armor tank reduces speed.

So it depends on the ship, and the fleet and the purpouse. Armor Hac cs Sheild Hac gangs have their own advantages. Generaly AH runs AB, SH runs MWD and DMG and Tracking mods.

All things equal, a shield booster uses more capacitor than an armor repairer, but gives you less EHP for the capacitor use. Armor repairers are thus more efficient. However, shield tanking has other advantages so they end up being both viable.

it depends on the ship indeed but when you are flying the smaller ships you can use builds for both shield tanking and armor tanking to see which you prefer. Try using EFT or a similar program to fit your ship with the tools it need for shield tanking and then again for armor tanking. Set your ship up both ways fly missions and see what works for you.

Shield tanking and Armor tanking are both equally effective overall. Most ships cater to one or the other. Gallente and Amarr are usually armor tankers, while Caldari and Minmatar are better known for shield tanking. This varies ship to ship depending on the distribution of fitting slots and ship bonuses.

Sometimes the best tank depends on the situation. Large fleets almost always fit armor tanks while in smaller gangs both are used. Cap fleets are almost universally armor tanked.

Shield tanking can be passive or active, whereas armor tanking cannot be passive. This fact can limit your armor tanking options, creating a more efficient shield tanking configuration choice set. The resists on armor are higher, but I find that that doesn't make up for a popped ship if you start out by tanking armor.

If you are fitting your tank for missioning then the answer can be as simple as which faction you are facing.

Sansha ships, for example, do mostly EM damage so an armour tank works better and can either be harder or require fewer modules if you don't need it to be rock hard.

Angel Cartel ships on the other hand do mostly explosive damage so a shield tank has an easier time of it.
